To buy myself a ring

I have recently finished studying for (hopefully) the last time. It's been a hard slog and very stressful times. Now I have finished I will be promoted which means a little extra to spare.
I'm really proud of myself and would like to mark the occasion by buying myself a ring. I have fallen in love with one which is perfect, 3 diamonds set in platinum in an unusual design. I would wear it on my right hand.
My worry is DP, we had a conversation about marriage a year ago when his divorce was settled. I said then I was in no rush for anything to change between us and it hasn't been discussed since. I bought myself some expensive perfume a while back and he was a little put out as he said he was going to buy me it for Xmas. I will talk to him before I buy it but I just wonder what anyone thinks about this?

If you want to buy yourself a ring then do it! The xmas perfume scenario is nuts! It's July! So he expected you to wait until Christmas to get the perfume you wanted? Sorry but I think you have the right to buy yourself whatever you wish! If he doesn't like it then maybe he needs to get a bit more creative/generous! Wink

It’s a piece of jewellery and if you like it and can afford it then I don’t see why you wouldn’t buy it.

Although ridiculous as this is, I have a friend who did similar and bought herself a very nice ring then found herself in a situation with a long term boyfriend, they bought a house together, discussed marriage as something they both wanted and then no proposal. Turns out he felt pressured to buy her a ring that was nicer/bigger/more expensive than the one she already had... She didn’t care one bit but it caused a bit of a silly situation.

Get a ring that is not so much like a classic engagement ring if it bothers you?

Do it! I got a ring made recently as I had inherited some money and wanted to treat myself. I love it, I wear it every day and it makes me so happy. My only regret is that I didn't go for bigger diamonds! Grin
