To ask where to stay for a short break

Posting for traffic... We're planning to break up the drive back from a holiday in Scotland to our home in the South by visiting various family along the way. The way it works out we have a few spare days to stay somewhere in the middle, essentially drawing a line across the country at Newcastle and another line at Leeds. I'm not familiar with this part of the country. Looking for an attractive family friendly town with some history to wonder round and explore. Any suggestions? Thanks!

York!

CremeDeSudo · 18/07/2018 15:15

Definitely York. Possibly Nottingham but that might be too far South? Tbh, I'd just go with York!

Third York!

Or alnwick? Very pretty, nice beaches, largest second hand bookshop in England

Explore Hadrian's Wall?

AnnDerry · 18/07/2018 15:40

Yep - York
Vikings, Romans, medieval towers and streets, nice cafes and restaurants, small enough to walk round without needing to take transport (though it's the only open air bus tour we ever do because it's fab.)

York is awesome, one of the best places I've ever been, usually go twice a year.

Skiiltan · 18/07/2018 15:46

York is attractive but very touristy. Other places worth a look might be Beverley (market town in East Yorkshire) and Harrogate (spa town in west Yorkshire).

Scottishgirl85 · 18/07/2018 15:53

Wow that's fairly conclusive!!!! Thank you so much!!! Going to start researching accommodation and hoping we haven't left it too late...

@Doidontimmm which apartment is this in York please

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/10/2018 17:10

York is fantastic, so much to do and lots of lovely places to eat. The Cold War Bunker is worth a visit.

LakieLady · 16/10/2018 17:13

York and Harrogate are both lovely.

Whitby is interesting, if you fancy something a bit different. The Yorkshire Dales has fantastic countryside.
