To not go on the cruise

The summer work part is a London boat cruise. I've said I'm not going as I get sea sick now the boss has said he's really unhappy and not sure I'm a good fit for the company as socializing is part of work. Aibu?

Is it just up and down the Thames? It is very unlikely the water would be choppy.

breakfastmeansbreakfast · 17/07/2018 13:45

It is, but I get travel sick just in a car unless I'm driving

OP I'm with you on this one - I'm absolutely terrified of boats in all forms and get seasick on even the flattest water. Is the cruise within your work hours? If not I wouldn't have thought there's any way you can be made to do it unless there's something specific in your contract? (I'm not sure, but I'm sure someone will now).

VelociraptorRex · 17/07/2018 13:48

*know not now!

Queenie8 · 17/07/2018 13:52

I get sea sick too. I get sea sick on the London River bus, but we were gifted a river cruise and lunch, amazingly I wasn't sea sick. I think it must be because it is slower than the river bus.

A tip that has helped me is to try and keep the horizon in your view/sight line.

If it's a social event, after hours, I don't think your boss can force you to attend, but I'd check with HR???

BritInUS1 · 17/07/2018 14:09

I get motion sick and absolutely wouldn’t go in it either x

breakfastmeansbreakfast · 17/07/2018 14:42

Its out of work hours, so can't force me but can make my life difficult

I wonder if it's because he fancies me?

OP posts:
VelociraptorRex · 17/07/2018 15:02

Possibly an even better reason not to go then?

hornbeam · 17/07/2018 15:14

Say you are happy to go as long as he doesn't mind you throwing up all over him Grin

Aquamarine1029 · 17/07/2018 15:31

Get Dramamine and one of those anti-sea sick bracelets. I know several people who use them and they say they really work.

breakfastmeansbreakfast · 17/07/2018 20:27

The bracelet s don't work on me, and I'd like to throw up on him!

OP posts:
Chesntoots · 17/07/2018 20:46

I think you should definitely go for the purpose of introducing him to your lunch!!!

Nomorechickens · 17/07/2018 20:48

Say you're going then call in sick at the last moment.

Mummyschnauzer · 17/07/2018 20:50

Firstly he’s a knob, do you like working there? If so kwelld or sturgeon got me through the bay of biscay a few times

troodiedoo · 17/07/2018 20:52

Bay of Biscay Envy

ilovesooty · 17/07/2018 20:54

Why should it be because he fancies you?

greendale17 · 17/07/2018 20:58

I wonder if it's because he fancies me?

^Yeah sure that must be it (!) Hmm

Singlenotsingle · 17/07/2018 21:00

Take one of those Kwells. They're very good. It doesn't look as though your career will go very far if you don't participate.

marylou1977 · 17/07/2018 21:00

Go. Puke on your boss’ shoes. Tell him seasickness has nothing to do with being a good fit for your company. Idiot.

Itchytights · 17/07/2018 21:04

Ewwww, Bay of Biscay can be reallllly bad, as can flying over it.

Get pissed and you won’t notice

Take some stugeron before hand if it's a medication you can take and give it a try. I've used it in the most stormy of seas and it's really made a difference.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 17/07/2018 21:32

Why do you think he fancies you?

SophieLMumsnet · 17/07/2018 21:50

Sorry all, we reckon this is a PBP - we're zapping the thread now.

Singlenotsingle · 17/07/2018 23:27

I don't think it zapped!
