To buy nice underwear...

DailyMailCanFO · 11/07/2018 18:31

...for my teens.

13 and 16 year old. Both love nice underwear, not for any reason other than it makes them feel good, not because they want to show it off to anyone!

Friend is horrified I buy them bras from Ann Summers, I just don't see why it's a problem. I go with them in the shop, they usually shop in the sale (£5 for a good quality, well fitting bra) and they buy the more basic pretty but not push up etc bras.

They fit better than Primark/M&S/Debenhams and they feel good wearing them, what's the problem.with that??

YANBU to buy them nice underwear but YABVU to think that Ann Summers constitutes 'nice'. It is overpriced crap, IMO.

FASH84 · 11/07/2018 18:37

Ann summers is awful, poor quality and nylon stuff. Buy them nice bras but not from there. Also it's a very adult shop for the 13 year old in particular, think about the adult shoppers and how they might feel with teens wandering around. The m and s Rosie for autograph sets are very pretty in a classy way and are often silk or a silk blend, if you want to treat them. It's not to my taste as a bit teenagery but Victoria's secret have fun, pretty sporty styles for their age

rosesandflowers1 · 11/07/2018 18:45

Nothing wrong with it. I love pretty/sexy pyjamas and underwear and so does DD1!

I'm generally not a fan of Ann Summers but have a couple of sets from there that surprised me.

henpeckedinchief · 11/07/2018 19:19

YANBU. In the olden days when La Senza existed and I was a teen, my friends and I would frequently buy nice underwear sets just because we liked them and it made us feel grown up. And that was years before anyone else got near my underwear! I think it's good for your kids to internalise the message that you buy nice underwear for yourself and nobody else Smile

My dd15 loves nice underwear, has for the last few years. She has more than me tbh. I buy her some as presents, generally pink, Victoria secrets. She loves a peacocks set though, likes the fit. I’m having to steer her away from honeybirdette where I buy mine when pushing the boat out as she’s still growing and it’s really not cheap, some of their stuff is far too kinky too. It makes her feel good, she abhores not matching too and I figure if i find I feel more confident, feminine and well put together wearing nice underwear why shouldn’t she. I agree with pp, nice underwear is for you, not anyone else most of the time.

I do have a few Anne summers sets but I find their quality not quite up to their prices and the fit is a bit off for me.

DailyMailCanFO · 11/07/2018 20:54

My two like Ann Summers and we buy it in the sale, as I said, fiver a bra isn't bad!!! It also washes well and is some of the best for fit for them, especially DD2.
PP said about other customers not wanting to shop with teens about. They just browse the more 'normal underwear and don't go near any of the more adult ones and avoid the walled off section with sex toys. Shop is always full of groups of teens/20 somethings when I have been there.

Oh yes, Redcherries My DD will come hurtling into the laundry room to find knickers/a bra that match something she's got in her drawer - she can't bear to wear something unmatching!

I don't know how hers always get separated in the wash though Grin

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/07/2018 20:59

I think those that disagree just have a dated view of Ann Summers- when it was all undercover parties. I would say it’s definitely now trying to go more underwear mainstream- where la senza left a gap in the market

MeanTangerine · 11/07/2018 21:01

You take a 13 year old into Ann Summers?

Racecardriver · 11/07/2018 21:03

I was about to say YANBU I have aways lived nice underwear and would happily go without food as a teenager for a livery silk bra and knicker set but Ann summers is very very far from nice underwear

MissCharleyP · 11/07/2018 21:10

I find the choice of shop at bit strange as like PP, I’ve never found their stuff to be ‘quality’. Boux Avenue or Victoria’s Secret Pink would be more appropriate.

Redcherries · 11/07/2018 21:10

It’s easy enough to shop in Anne summers without visiting the signed, sperated over 18 area surely? Just stick to the front of the shop, further back you go the saucier until it’s a screened area.

dementedma · 11/07/2018 21:13

my young adut dds like boux avenue for treats. Too expensive for me!

rosesandflowers1 · 11/07/2018 21:16

I love Boux Avenue. I've got tons of swimming costumes and underwear from there, it's so absurdly comfy.

kaykay72 · 11/07/2018 21:17

I took my daughter, when she was on the road to recovery from her ED to Victoria’s Secret where she chose some lovely knickers. She’d only really had cheap and cheerful before, wearing these made her feel pretty and special and no one else knew. We laughed about the being her ‘therapy pants’ but it’s one of the few things she remembers fondly from that time x

Nice underwear can be a real boost x

Iwantaunicorn · 11/07/2018 21:19

YANBU, As a PP said, it’s good for them to have the message that you buy nice underwear for yourself and no one else. Loads of time before they end up buying crappy boring underwear from the supermarket because that’s the only place they get to shop due to the kids!

UneMoonit · 11/07/2018 21:20

You have your children in Ann Summers? That's surprising.

TroubledLichen · 11/07/2018 21:20

Victoria’s Secret as recommended by PP is loads better but they start at a 32 back size so might not be an option for the OP’s DDs. Boux Avenue is good but I don’t think you can beat a well fitting bra for £5 though so whilst I do grimace slightly at a 13YO in Ann Summers it’s not the worst thing in the world. It’s certainly not nice though, more naff and nylon.

DailyMailCanFO · 11/07/2018 22:26

Yes as a PP said they stick to front of store and it certainly does seem to be trying to fill the gap La Senza has left. Victoria's Secret don't suit my Dd's as we tried there, and just about everywhere else before AS.

Didn't Ann Summers take Knickerbox over? Their standard underwear is very similar to Knickerbox stuff.
