Hi,

I posted this in FWR but it's been suggested I re-post here for traffic.

I'd love to see her in the nominations for BBC sports Personality of the year 2018.

Anyone else fancy lobbing the BBC to get her on the list which is then whittled down to a shortlist by a special panel?

Lots of lobbying going on for the football team on twitter to @bbcsport and #bbcspoty.

AIBU to ask you to lobby for this amazing female athlete?

To be clear I do not know or have any personal/professional links to Nicky Spinks. I just read about her achievements and was in awe.

What an incredible achievement.

I couldn't have done that at 31, never mind 51 (and having had a hysterectomy and breast cancer).

She's the first person to run the "double Ramsey" - yes that's right, first person not "just" the first woman.

116 miles and just shy of 56 hours.

She's broken multiple Fell running records - why isn't she Dame Nicky?

Time to celebrate an amazing achievement by a female athlete!!!!

Sounds good - thanks for the info and link!

Flippetydip · 10/07/2018 17:13

Totally agree - what an amazing achievement! I fear the World Cup will totally overwhelm everything else at SPOTY this year but it would be good at least to get her nominated.

Dragoncake · 10/07/2018 17:13

56 hours running Shock She's amazing.

Is there another way to lobby for nomination? I'm not on Twitter...

randomchap · 10/07/2018 17:14

It is an absolutely amazing achievement. She should be honoured for it. I have walked the Ramsey, it took me 6 days. I couldn't imagine the determination, skill and endurance to run it twice.

@Dragoncake

BBC Sports Facebook page? Or you can contact BBC Sports here:

I'm not on Twitter either, there must be a way for grownups people who don't tweet to nominate/support?

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 17:21

Grown ups Grin

I believe I've provided a mechanism for the adults among us GrinGrinGrin

Oh bugger - typo in the title!!!

@MNHQ please can you edit to Nicky Spinks?

I found info for how the awards worked in 2017 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4Z5SvK744sgV419kxgJG929

-it didn't look like members of the public could nominate except for the 'unsung heroes' award.Confused

WomanWithAltitude · 10/07/2018 17:27

I've contacted them to nominate her. She's inspirational, and a lovely person to boot.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 17:28

Yes I found similar but I also found a lot of people had been contacting BBC Sports to get people on the main list.

I guess even if she doesn't make the bar for SPOTY the bbc might be interested in her.

Dragoncake · 10/07/2018 18:25

I'll contact them. Can't do any harm. Thanks!

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 19:03

Great!

Love Nicky Spinks, she's an absolutely astonishing person and so casual about what she does. I was thrilled about her latest achievement.

I'll definitely get in touch with the BBC.

If you've not seen it, Running Forever, a docu about her Bob Graham Round (the Lake District equivalent to the Ramsay) is on YouTube. Only 45 minutes, very watchable.

Great thread OP.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 19:49

@AskMeHow

I posted the running forever link on FWR.

Here you go.

Thanks @MNHQ for editing the title re: my typo.

AskMeHow · 10/07/2018 20:32

What's fwr? I missed that in your OP.

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 21:26

FWR is the feminist chat board on MN :-)

When I first joined MN (many, many moons ago) I thought it was a scary place.

So I lurked for a bit...

Then I discovered it was the best part of MN, full of so many articulate and interesting women who are happy to discus and debate.

That's just my opinion though Grin

That's amazing! I can't believe I'd never heard of her before. I'd love to see more women being honoured for sporting achievements and also more diverse sports being celebrated

arranfan · 10/07/2018 22:06

What an achievement and on so many levels. Huzzah for Nicky Spinks!

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 22:24

I know - I'd not heard of her until today!

LeiaTheSlaya · 10/07/2018 22:48

Shock My stairs to bed are looking a bit daunting right now, I have no comprehension how someone does that, but my god that's just astounding. Absolutely she should be lauded for that. Star

rhubarb82 · 10/07/2018 23:26

Agree Nicky Spinks is amazing and an inspiration. I'm due to run a half marathon up Snowdon this week. Am terrified but going to try to channel Nicky and hopefully it'll be a breeze!

AtreidesFreeWoman · 10/07/2018 23:40

@rhubarb82

Good luck!
