Intentionally luring cat into boot?

I have some neighbours who recently got a cat, a gorgeous possibly-pedigree but timid and shy cat. Recently, these neighbours have also started leaving their car boot open at random times for hours on end, or the passenger, window, sun roof etc etc even in bad weather...

About a month ago I returned home late at night to hear a muffled meowing from afar. I searched around and eventually saw she was in their car, amongst lots of boxes, junk etc. Straight away I knocked on their to say 'sorry to disturb but are you missing your cat?'. His immediate response was 'oh god yeah, is she in the car?'. I said yes but he didn't seem surprised or shocked, just shouted out to his partner 'the cat is in the car'. He explained to me that she thought he was missing and had probably been in there a few days. He let her out and neither seemed particularly pleased to see one another.

Aibu to think they are purposely trying to get this cat to go in their car? If so, why?! Should I be concerned? As I say she's a lovely little cat but very shy and timid and the owners reaction was just a little bit odd, I just didn't quite trust him but am aware I'm possibly reading too much into it?

Is it possible that she’s gone in the car and they’ve left it open so she can get out?

I’ve seen our neighbours’ cat in their car a couple of times (admittedly dash area with window open, not boot), I was so perplexed and now I’ve read this I’m wondering if it’s a thing?? What the heck?

Erm...how weird.

Surely it's too hot this time of year?

LanguidLobster · 10/07/2018 14:26

And what if she does a little poo? Is she able to enter/exit by herself?

If the cat had been locked in the boot for "a couple of days" then it would stink of cat piss at the very least!

Our cat sneaks in any open car doors at the first opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if you knocked on my door to tell me my cat was in the car.
