TV License bother

tryagainsardines · 10/07/2018 13:23

I've recently moved house. The previous occupant hasn't bothered to change her address or leave a forwarding address so I have been popping them back in the post box marked, "return to sender/not known at this address." Anyway 8months in she still hasn't bothered and I've been receiving letters that say on the outside "you will be prosecuted- final notice" etc.
I've never opened these letters, just kept sending them back (also felt a bit sorry for her as when they catch up with her she'll have some trouble to deal with).
Today the postman knocked the door. He had a letter addressed to previous occupant. He told me these were from the tv License people and that I should ring them.
When I moved in I notifed them of my new address and that I didn't require a tv license and I don't watch tv (I know thhe rules, no i player or live streaming off any device. Nexflix is permitted though)
I rang them today and they informed me they were aking a visit imminenty as I I cannot prove this other woman doesn't live here. eh?!
I'm so annoyed. i don't want strangers in my home and I'm nursing a young baby. Do I have to let them in?

No you dont OP.

Good luck though because they can be utter pricks

DobbyisFREE · 10/07/2018 13:27

No, you don't have to let them in. Legally they would require a search warrant from the police to get past the door if you don't let them. They can be annoying though and keep turning up / harassing you so it can be easier to just give in or you can report them for harassment if you can be bothered. I would just to make a point but most would prefer an easy life.

PlowerOfScotland · 10/07/2018 13:27

Tell them to fuck off. They can't come in unasked and you've done everything you need to do. Post the letter confirming you don't need a licence in your window.

They harassed me for years until I lost my shit at them over the phone. We'd done phone calls, letters, they'd visited and confirmed I didn't need a licence but would leave me alone. Not proud of losing my temper at them but they were thick as mince bullies.

OliviaStabler · 10/07/2018 13:37

Will the paperwork of the sale that shows she no longer owns the property be enough for them?

NameChangeUni · 10/07/2018 13:42

When I lived in student halls, we had letters like that all year around (we didn’t have a tv in halls, we only really watched Netflix on our laptops so no need for one). I could be wrong but I don’t think they will actually go futher beyond asking to visit and sending these letters. No one actually came to visit us.

When I was younger they used to hound us. They would come round in the evening and try to trick my dad by saying "Oh sorry did we interrupt Eastenders" and things like that. If I answered the door they would ask to come in and pretend they were my dads friends. When they were turned away they would put their foot in the door and try to push through. Nasty, nasty people.

specialsubject · 10/07/2018 13:55

fortunately the op knows that ownership or otherwise of a tv is irrelevant.

capita are not bailiffs and do not have right of entry so refuse..may aso be worth a double check that the address is correctly registered as no license needed. websites dont always work, look at this one.

keep at it with entitled cow's post but dont waste sympathy on here. serves her right for leaving a mess.

just ignore them. Capita are full of shit. In the unlikely chance they come to call, just tell them you are withdrawing assumed right of entry and you will call the police if they dont vacate your property.

reeldoop · 10/07/2018 14:13

by the way, they always send those final notice, youll be prosecuted etc mails. They are meaningless. Ignore.

tryagainsardines · 10/07/2018 14:43

Thanks for all your replies. It looks like it might not be a likely senario, anyway!
Olivia I could do that if push comes to shove. I would just be annoyed to be further inconvienced due to their incompetence and the previous owners laziness. She is obviously not paying for a license in her new property if they are still looking for her here.
corrie no can do. I didn't have any contact with her during the whole process. The company we went through won't accept/forward her mail either (fair enough!) I did try looking her up on FB to let her know I was sending her mail back but she has a very common name so I couldn't be sure I was messaging the right person.

You do not have to let them in, you do not even have to talk to them. The postie was wrong advising you to call them. If they show up, and you do not want them in your house, start videoing them, and refuse to confirm any details, especially your name. Alternatively, if you do not have a tv, you can let them in to check. We did this (dh was out) and I didn't now the law then. They came in had a good nose, asked if I streamed live tv over the web etc etc. Then they filled in a form and got me to sign it, telling me that they would remove us from their records. They lied, after a brief hiatus, the letters started again and we got another vist.

LauraMipsum · 10/07/2018 15:23

I wrote them a really snarky letter in similar circumstances pointing out that I had my No Licence Declaration and that continuing to send me threatening letters and threatening humans (four in four weeks!) they were pursuing a course of harassment.

They sent back a lukewarm apology and fucked off for, ooh, about eighteen months.

tryagainsardines · 10/07/2018 16:30

Oh fgs, reading all your responses, it's like they cannot possibly fathom that some people don't want to watch the BBC. It's so silly to unnecessarily hound people.
I read books on my ereader. I've never had to flash my library card at anyone!

specialsubject · 10/07/2018 17:21

not just the bbc.

capita are not bailiffs.

BackToTheFuschia7 · 10/07/2018 17:31

Don’t let them in. You don’t even have to answer the door to them. Don’t let them interrupt time with your new baby.
