I replied to random post on Instagram about trumps zero tolerance policy separating children from parents just someone saying how upset they r and me agreeing. Someone replied and we got into debate about her basiclly saying trump is good man and obama separated families so its ok kinda thing, it went on and off for few days and it went along lines of her asking whats so terrible about trump, me giving kinda essay ,with video articles backing it up. she justifying it all by saying it happens to everyone, being rude, bullying, sexual assult!? Etc and hes done great things for country, i honestly thought it was bot so said so, found out wasnt anyways long story short , every argument i had against including sources to back up she just either did whatabboutisms or said souces were fake, eventually she agreed that children separates from families isnt good thing and she doesnt feel bad for them as she doesnt feel much empathy. but trump has sign order so has stopped , basiclly she just sounded so brain washed it was painful to listen to and i did at times explain that im not engaging with someone who uses whatabboutisms or pick and chooses what they agree with on 1 source. Anyways we kinda finished me wishing her the best and she me and me reminding her to use critical thinking. She admitted while talking to me was first time she was looking at different websites and researching properly. And said she has always just believed what trump has said. And all her family are same.
What im trying to get at is .... i live in uk i not directly but indirectly and still awful what is happening but i cant stop thinking about her converstaion. that there r people in america who think like this , she also kept saying im in dark and am blind to what obama did etc , its was like listening to someone in cult. Ive been really upset hearing about the children at boarder and what is hapening and its just scary that it seems like cult, aibu to be concerned this is out there.

Why are you talking to this idiot? Just block them.

chicken2015 · 07/07/2018 00:15

She asked my opnion and i gave, and she replied. we wasnt rude, i also think its important to not just talk to people who agree i think thats how we r in this mess!

The big mess with US immigration is:

  1. children cannot be kept in holding with other adults for more than 20 days
  2. immigration takes more than 20 days
  3. children and parents are then released into US
  4. they spend their lives as illegal immigrants, unable to access benefits, healthcare, minimum wage etc.
  5. These illegal immigrants are exploited and abused by Us employers, including building trade, restaurants, fruit pickers, prostitution etc.
  6. The non-Trump supporters have cheap labour, sex slaves, cheap restaurants, chap building etc.
MazDazzle · 07/07/2018 00:30

It sounds like you challenged her thinking in a very positive way.

chicken2015 · 07/07/2018 00:33

As a parent if u take out the immigration aspect out. I see mums and dads having their children take away and children living with the consequences of not having that attachment in the most important time when its vital for their well being and development and obv something was happening which meant these children wasnt taken beofre april when policy came into effect. As we have 3000 children who have been removed

chicken2015 · 07/07/2018 00:43

I guess i should add ive kinda done with the 'debate' not sure how anyone can not feel compassion and empathy for parents on a parenting site that r having their children taken from them and not known when they will return if at all, due to a recent policy

Looks like you did something positive if you got someone to see a different way of looking at things ratheret than just believing everything from one source.

modzy78 · 07/07/2018 00:55

Were you taking to my extended family by chance? I have quite a few who openly support him and all his horrific policies. All while claiming to be good Christians and patriotic Americans. Trying to have a discussion is like banging your head against a wall. There are unfortunately a lot of Americans like that. They believe that all the moderate to liberal people are being manipulated by "fake news" (anything that's not Fox News or ultra right-wing websites). It would be funny if it wasn't messing up the world so much.

PuddlesOfBud · 07/07/2018 01:05

You can't stop thinking about the fact that some Americans believe Trump? You live in the UK where Brexit is Brexit because half the country listened to a gormless twat with a perma pint in his hand, a floppy haired knob and a BIG BUS.

Meanwhile the country still isn't fufilling it's duty to the refugee crisis and people and children are living in makeshift camps in France while they risk life and limb to get here. Yarl’s Wood immigration detention centre has had numerous sexual assaults, they've locked up vulnerable women who have suffered sexual violence and FGM, and seperated breastfeeding mothers from their babies.

The world is full of stupid, lazy, I'm all right Jack assholes. It's just easier to see it looking in then looking out. If you aren't sure, ask a European in this country.

chicken2015 · 07/07/2018 01:05

I worry that for the time we were talking her eyes were open by if u r wity family that have same viewd u live in community that all share same views going against or even thinking differently would be exhausting and quite uncommon, hence the problem we have now.

Sorry for spelling mistakes dyslexic and tired! Bad combo

Its the brainwashing and cult like status that bothers me. Its lack of common sense and critical thinking. Im not sure what ur getting at , should i not be upset with it? Should i not be concerned for mine and daughters future

chicken2015 · 07/07/2018 01:17

Surely i can be outraged with more than one thing and it doesnt have to be limited to where i live

Listen, I live in the US and I'm grateful for anyone, anywhere who will shout the truth about that son-of-a-bitch-bastard! So, thank you chicken for trying.

The problem is that the majority of the MAGA crowd are ignorant as fuck. When Scrotus (that's my name for that man) said "I could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and people would still vote for me" he was speaking the plain truth. He's appealing to the lowest common denominator and they aren't going to listen to anyone.

But we just keep plugging away. Remaining silent is not an option.

chicken2015 · 07/07/2018 10:35

Yes my husband did laugh when i told him , he said im convincing 1 trump supporter at a time another how ever many million to go!

OP posts:
Jux · 07/07/2018 19:00

Well, keep plugging away, Chicken. One at a time is better than none.

TBH, I don't know anyone who likes Scrotus or approves of him, so I have few opportunities to rail against him. It's true that we in the UK are no better, so I tend to shout about that.

You'll be doing the world a favour anyway.
