Appendectomy recovery time? Holiday?

Sorry, posting for traffic.

Dd was diagnosed with appendicitis and had her appendix out two days ago (keyhole surgery) after a few days of abdominal pain. The operation went well, and she's being a trooper.

I'm just wondering - we have a holiday booked in the last 2 weeks of August, in about 6 and a half weeks time. This will involve driving from where we live near London to the south of France, taking the ferry, to spend two weeks in a house with a pool.

Is she realistically going to be well enough and not in pain by that point to go? The doctors are being quite non-committal about how much pain she'll be in by that time.

I remember a girl in my class at school was off for 3 months when she had appendicitis, but apart from that I don't really know anyone whose had it.

She will be OK by then.. I had open procedure. Peritonitis etc. Wasoff work5 weeks.

I also think she will be fine. I had a failed keyhole, then open appendectomy. I felt not quite right for about 6 months but a holiday/car travel wouldn’t have been a problem.

MaryShelley1818 · 01/07/2018 17:11

She’ll be absolutely fine...I had 5.5wks off (realistically could have gone back a little sooner) and went back to a job that involves quite a lot of driving.

Check with the insurance company - she might not be insured within a certain amount of time following surgery, so if she became ill while abroad it might cost tens of thousands of pounds to come back

EmergencyBanana · 01/07/2018 17:19

I had mine removed in the old fashioned way with several stitches. Although it's sensible to take it easy for a few weeks I had no actual significant pain after a couple of weeks. Just make sure not to overdo it physically.

Crusoe · 01/07/2018 17:24

She will be fine. I had 2 weeks off after mine but didn’t need it ( not keyhole).
Pat Cash played at Wimbledon 2 weeks after having his removed- he made the quarterfinals.

My nephew had keyhole surgery in France for appendicitis and travelled home by car 4 days later. Recovery times for keyhole are significantly less than for open surgery.

EatMyGoal · 01/07/2018 17:28

Should be fine, dc had appendix out last year, keyhole and was advised off school for two weeks, had to be readmitted with an abscess but was still only off 3 weeks

henpeckedinchief · 01/07/2018 17:30

She'll be grand. I was pretty much back on my feet within 2 weeks of my emergency appendectomy. Barring complications she should be fine!

Terri84 · 01/07/2018 17:36

The doctors are being quite non-committal
Everybody's different, so the doctors wouldn't commit. If they told you that she would be fine and she wasn't, then you'd ne on here complaining about them.

A friends son had keyhole surgery for appendicitis and he was back at work 2 weeks later.

He was working on the checkout at a supermarket! He said he felt fine.

Simonutti72 · 01/07/2018 18:09

We went on holiday 10 weeks after my ds had open heart surgery. Driving & ferry - we were fine & it was a much needed break. Ensure your insurance covers you but there are loads who specialise in those who have medical conditions or recent surgery. The doc advised us to make sure we were covered to return with medical support if required & that we were within driving distance of a decent hospital. Have a great hol.

Poodles1980 · 01/07/2018 18:15

Had it done by keyhole. Back to work less than a week later. Not particularly painfull after a few days

KickAssAngel · 01/07/2018 18:17

Like Poodles - I was back at work 6 days later.

AlliKaneErikson · 01/07/2018 18:19

I went back to school after 2 weeks, maybe less (not keyhole and a bigger incision hmthan usual as they did some exploratory work when ‘in there’). She should be fine.

thenightsky · 01/07/2018 18:20

I had it done on a Friday night (keyhole) and only took one week off work. Was back the following Monday. I was fine within days TBH, but was told not to drive for a week after general anaesthetic.

PrincessGeorge · 01/07/2018 18:21

My son had an open appendectomy in October, was off the pain killers by day 4/5, tried to go back to school the second week but actually had to take another week off. Couldn’t work out hard /do contact sports for 6 weeks but that was just being cautious. As long as you disclose to your ins company I would think it would be fine by August. Enjoy your holiday!

Lindy2 · 01/07/2018 18:21

I think almost certainly she will be fine. As long as it all heals as expected with no complications.
I had my appendix removed but they had to do a proper cut, not keyhole, as it was at the point of bursting.

  • week 1 - I felt like I'd been hit by a bus. I could only get up and about for a few minutes at a time then I needed to lie down again. Had to have a rota of help from family to look after 1 year old DD as I literally couldn't do it.
  • week 2 - huge improvement but having to take things gently (or as best I could with a one year old to look after Brew).
  • week 3 - went on holiday in the uk. Took it easy but was ok. I was determined that we wouldn't have to cancel and it was very good to have DH around to help with DD.
  • week 4 - back to work on light duties.
  • week 5 - back to normal.
I hope she recovers well.
bostonkremekrazy · 01/07/2018 18:23

Dc aged 13 had theirs out 6 weeks ago keyhole surgery.
Was in hospital 4 days post-op.
Took the following week off school as advised in case tummy was knocked et .
No sports for 4 weeks..
Was back to normal by then - we had to insist on the no sports rule, and gulped when we turned our backs and found said child bouncing on trampoline etc!
Complete trooper...and 6 weeks on you'd never guess! Scars are almost invisible already!
I'd say your holiday will be fine
