Sorry i know not an AIBU but posting for more responses.
We have flight from gatwick at 8.30pm on friday night and hoping to do chessington 1st. It says its 30mins away but how long is it likely to be in rush hour. We have checked in bags and car hire to return as well. Thanks

I don't think it'll be too bad as it's not far but I'd allow at least an hour.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 30/06/2018 14:58

Chessington isn't very big so if you got there at 9 you'd be more than ready to leave by 4.30/5

Chessington doesn't open until 10am

ParkerPen · 30/06/2018 15:03

I would recommend leaving chessington by 4:30 at the latest to be safe.

bokkleorandoove · 30/06/2018 15:07

30 mins is possible with no traffic, an hour should be plenty of time. I would leave by 4.30 at the latest (I think the park closes at 5) as it can be pretty difficult getting out of the car park onto the main road if you’re going towards the m25/gatwick direction. It might also we worth paying extra for the premium parking to save you some time.

'An hour is plenty'Shock Not a chance in rush hour!

Agree get there at 9 - gates open at 10 but queues start way before (assuming you're going in school holidays). Leave at 4.00 - bear in mind it can take you half an hour or more to actually leave the car park, and you'll be doing a right turn out of the park which can be a bugger. That gives you two hours to get to LGW and return car etc. Which is doable. But please check traffic alerts regularly. If something major happens on M25/M23 you could be stuck for several hours.

I agree with the advice to leave at 4. It's not far away but you will probably have to queue to get out of the park and will be hitting Friday rush hour. That will be plenty of time at the park if you get there at 10 anyway.

dahliaaa · 30/06/2018 15:41

There are new roadworks on that stretch I think so allow plenty of time. Leave at 4/4.30

Skyejuly · 30/06/2018 15:42

If it's Friday afternoon there will be traffic.

Terri84 · 30/06/2018 15:44

There are pubs at Gatwick Airport if you don't get delayed on the way there you can spend your time at.

CheesecakeAddict · 30/06/2018 16:14

30 mins is what it took us at 2am when it was a straight run with no traffic. It once took me 2 hours when there was an accident during peak time.

mummyof2boys30 · 30/06/2018 16:20

Thanks everyone. Think we will leave at 4 then to be on the safe side and get tea at the airport. Have never flew to gatwick so had no idea.

Def leave at 4, Chessington is on the main road to the M25 and there will be a serious amount of traffic and on a Friday it can be horrendous as everyone is trying to get home.

PatriciaHolm · 30/06/2018 16:27

I live 2 mins from chessington and go to gatwick regularly- yes that on a Friday pm will take a good hour if you account for getting out of the chessington car park as well which on its own can be quite a feat. I think the 4 pm plan with dinner at GW is a good one!

IncyWincyMouseRat · 30/06/2018 16:42

There are roadworks on the M23 currently. Not massively disruptive but there is a 50mph speed limit (with average speed cameras!), 40mph in some areas - so definitely leave a reasonable amount of time.
