We recently moved house. After we moved in my DM made a comment about needing to buy us a housewarming present, and asked if there was any furniture we needed and I said there probably was but we hadn't talked about decorating etc yet so didn't really know what we wanted etc.
A few weeks later I mention we are buying a new vacuum cleaner and some other appliances. She says 'great, one of those can be your housewarming present, which one do you want?' I say I haven't looked into things yet, she says to buy one and she will pay me back.
We buy a vacuum cleaner. My mum sees it at our house then repeats about buying it, I say we ended up picking an expensive model thinking she might prefer to pay for one of the cheaper things we buy. She then texts me and DH repeatedly asking how much it was, saying she wants to buy it for us. I feel a bit awkward but let her know.
She replies saying it's more than she spent on a hoover for herself, 'but she did promise'. She's now texted asking if its ok for it to be my birthday present as well.
Honestly, I'd rather not have a share of a vacuum cleaner I already bought as a birthday present. I'd rather she just got me a cheap suprise and forgot all about this giving us money for a thing we chose and bought. I've ended up feeling guilty for spending so much (but we can afford it!).
AIBU to feel awkward about the whole thing? I don't even know what to say now that won't feel like rejecting her kind gift.
