Hull / Kingston Upon Hull

Sorry didn't really know where else to put this!

I'm in Scarborough for a week in August and I'm thinking of getting the train down for a day of shopping. Does Kingston Upon Hull have lots of shops and also somewhere nice to sit and have lunch?

Also how far away is Hull train station to the centre etc?

Thank you xx

Hull train station is a hop and a skip from the centre, and right next to the 'best' shopping centre but it's not that great really, got a SuperDry and a massive Tesco, can't remember if there's much else there. Try googling 'St Stephen's Shopping Hull'.

The shopping in the city in general is really limited to be honest. The museums are nice though (and free) and Ferens Art Gallery is worth a visit.

Some nice places to eat around the Marina, but not in the town centre (in my experience, but this was a few years ago now so it might have changed).

Katinkka · 28/06/2018 14:26

The train station is right at the centre. There’s a few shopping centres but nothing special. I would go to Beverley over Hull city centre which is full of spice zombies.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/06/2018 14:29

Spice zombies? Christ, sounds like it's got worse since I was there!

We like Hull and go there a lot. The shops are good. There are several good museums and a gallery - all free. There are some decent places to eat - Church Street, along the Quayside, Dock Street, near the old fruit market and around the museums quarter. Give Princes Quay shopping centre a miss, it's rubbish these days.
Beverley is lovely, in an antique shops and tearooms sort of way.
From Scarborough you could easily go up the coast to Whitby. We love it so much I'd live there if I could. Or how about York? Easy to get to by train and packed with lots of shops and tourist attractions.

TheFifthKey · 28/06/2018 14:56

I’d definitely go to Beverley or York over Hull - nothing against Hull per se but those two places are better for a wander round and lunch. Plenty of shops in Beverley now too if you include the Flemingate development near the train station.

I'm from Leeds but travel to Hull quite frequently for work. With all the lovely places in Yorkshire I'd urge you to go somewhere else as others have said. York is lovely

Seniorcitizen1 · 28/06/2018 15:24

Hull is a dump - you should go to York

isseywithcats · 28/06/2018 15:25

i agree with everyone else York has more to see, the railway museum is free, and dont know if they still do it but certain days you can get a real steam train from Scarborough to York well worth the money

Twickerhun · 28/06/2018 15:28

If you want shops go to Hull. If you want tourist stuff try York or Beverly as pp says they are full of nice places to wander round.
Having said that,Hull is actually surprisingly nice as a place to visit. People do it down but it’s not so bad for a visit :)

KittyVonCatsworth · 28/06/2018 15:29

I loved Hull! I worked and lived there for 8 months and found it quite cosmopolitan. There’s an honesty about folks from Hull, very nice. They’ve also done a lot of work as part of the CoC. Loved it!

Lots going on!

NotANaturalBlonde · 28/06/2018 22:09

Thanks guys, it's not really culture or sightseeing I'm after. More just loads of high street shops for a few hours really - I need to shop for Autumn! 😊

Hull isn’t bad for shopping but not outstanding. Beverley is lovely but doesn’t have a huge range of high street stores, lots of independent shops. York has a good selection of both, and the station is about five minutes walk from the main shops.

Katinkka · 28/06/2018 22:22

Beverley has more upmarket shops like Seasalt, Barbour, Joules etc. I do most of my shopping there.

alltoomuchrightnow · 28/06/2018 22:23

I really like Hull! The shops and aquarium (The Deep) are great

alltoomuchrightnow · 28/06/2018 22:24

Beverley is pleasant enough, basically a posh market town, but in my view v boring shopping.. Hull is best bet for regular high street stores

RabbityMcRabbit · 28/06/2018 22:24

If you want shopping rather than sightseeing then go to Hull. York and Beverley are lovely but the shops can be pricey there. In Hull you have 2 big shopping centres.
Also, for the person who said Hull is a "dump", you clearly haven't seen all of it. So much history there...Wilberforce museum, Land of Green Ginger, the maritime museum, the Marina etc. Well worth a visit imo but then Hull is my hometown so I feel rather protective of it!

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 28/06/2018 22:29

I live in Scarborough and if you want shopping both hull and York have some great shops, Scarborough not so much! If you have the time go to both, you won't regret it!

VanillaSugar · 28/06/2018 22:31

Queensgate and House of Fraser are very close to Hull station.

For serious shopping, go to York.
