I think I have Tonsillitis.

Felt like death with shivers and aches the last 36 hours. Sore throat has come on in the last 12 hours and from what I can see inside my throat looks red, swollen and there's what looks like white spots on my tonsils.

I doubt I'll be given antibiotics and just be told to ride it out. If anything I would like a sick note for work because I'm likely to be off all week now because my throat is so bad (I work in a call centre and lose my voice every time I get a sore throat now!).

If you need a GPs sick note for the first 7 days you are sick you have to now pay for it.

Unless you have a compromised immune system and/or need a paid for sick note there is no point you going to the GP until this time next week.

If you have tonsillitis you should be give ABs. Do you feel like you're dying? Can't talk, swallow anything, throat beyond painful?

JessambardKingdomBrunel · 27/06/2018 19:38

There's no point. In all likelihood it'll pass in a few days, and GPs don't issue Med3 not fit for work certificates unless you're off for longer than a week.

Any less than a week and they'll either refuse to give you a note or make you pay about £25 for it.

I get bacterial tonsillitis frequently, I saw the GP for it last week - white blisters appeared on my tonsils and I felt sick and shaky and exhausted. I got a delayed script for penicillin in case it really took hold (I was going away) but in the end it cleared up without needing to use them. I’m sure you know about this but gargling with salty water helps a lot, it’s a bit gross but it does the trick. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the information about sick notes. Guess I will be self certifying then.

I pretty much couldn't stand up yesterday, my limbs felt so heavy and achey. Today I'm not as tired, but my throat is the worse I've had in a long time.

I am very anemic, would that affect anything?

If it gets to the point where you really can’t swallow, it’s definitely worth going to the GP. This happened to me recently and it turned out I had a quinsy (abcess), it’s easily treatable but you do need to get one treated.

Not trying to be dramatic - just I very nearly didn’t go to the doctors as have had tonsillitis quite a few times before!

BlueBug45 · 27/06/2018 19:50

OP if you have recognised anaemia then yes make a GPs appointment. However as you have what sounds like a cold with your tonsilitis you may not be given antibiotics.

Last time I had it because I have a compromised immune system and didn't have cold symptoms e.g. wasn't shivering I was given antibiotics. I was just annoyed because I otherwise felt well but my throat just bloody hurt.

Fatted · 27/06/2018 19:51

Thanks Peneleope82. I did make the mistake of googling my symptoms and I was worried about glandular fever! I think I will see how I get on this week and go next week if it's still bad.

I will just have to prepare for the shit storm at work.
