To not like how the self service machines in Tesco give change?

My local Tesco self service machine always give change as loads of coins. I.e if it’s 50p I never get a 50p piece but usually 2 10p, 4 5p and 2 and 1p coins. It’s always the same with any amount of change.

I know I’m getting my change but always end up with a purse full of small change! What’s wrong with a 50p piece!

it's less money for them to transport if they give you fiftypenceworth of shrapnel

I give it back to them everyso often...either by painstakingly counting it back to them at a manned till, or just shoving it in by the handful to the machines.

frustratedashell · 27/06/2018 13:32

Yes I find it annoying too!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 27/06/2018 13:38

I suspect it's because of people like me who always empty their 1p, 2p and 5p coins into the machine when paying. I'd be ashamed to pass off a handful of pennies on a human, but the machines don't judge me.

Or...maybe they DO judge me, and get their revenge on humankind by paying everyone back in small change?

OberonTheHopeful · 27/06/2018 13:39

YANBU, it's really annoying!

disahsterdahling · 27/06/2018 13:39

Sainsburys do the same. They are getting their own back for me getting rid of all my small change in them! Interesting that Tesco do it too.

TheFifthKey · 27/06/2018 13:40

Oh that’s annoying! I always tip in every piece of change I have, even if I know it’s far too much, in the hope I’ll get nice big coins in return.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 27/06/2018 13:58

Probably using up the change in the machine more evenly so they don't run out of 50ps. They will have a lot more of the small coins than 50p coins.

Oysterbabe · 27/06/2018 14:00

I always tip all my change in too. I suspect I am part of the problem.

Geekster1963 · 27/06/2018 14:01

Glad it’s not just me! My DD likes it as her piggy bank fills up faster as I put my change in there once there gets too much in my purse.

Not just Tesco. Happens in all of them and doesn't make sense to me. When in retail you always give back change in the biggest denominations possible. Always better to have 1p pieces available for change. Can't give change of 38p if your smallest denomination is 5p.

Pikachuneedshelp · 27/06/2018 14:05

I stopped putting cash in them, for this very reason. Which, I suspect, may be why they are set to do this.

TokyoSushi · 27/06/2018 14:06

Yep our Sainsburys does the same, but to be fair I put all of my small change into it and I expect everybody else does too!

malmi · 27/06/2018 14:48

They don't give out all the shrapnel that's put in them, it all drops into a bin at the bottom.

They are based on a US design so can't hold the full range of coins we use. They can only hold 6 different types of coin, so will make up change using that selection of coins, whilst maintaining the best balance of remaining change for the next customer.

I’m getting the sense you’re one of those people who literally count every coin into the cashier’s outstretched hand, oblivious to the fact that it’s much easier for everyone to just hand it over and that the cashier and the queue are silently seething Grin

Forgottencoffee · 27/06/2018 14:53

Yes! Ours is the same. I just make sure to feed them back in to the machine next time I’m there.

Although, I tried to “beat the system” once by paying for my lunch with all my copper. However, there was only 2p left to pay and I only had a pound coin. I didn’t think to just pay the rest on my card so used the £1, it gave me my change back in 1ps and 2ps. All 98p of it 😂

About your local Tesco spitting out lots of loose change at the self service check outs, know what you mean this happened to me brought it to the attention of a staff member, what a poor poor response nothing to do with me turned her back and walked away.
let me just say they will get every penny back with interest.
