I have been following the story of Noura and signed the petition like any woman with a heart would. This poor girl was forced into a marriage to a much older man and then raped by him while being held down by his family.

She was put to death for stabbing him after the incident, for which I can not blame her when you live in a country where a woman's worth is nothing.

So I was relieved this morning to read that her sentence had been commuted. But her case is not an isolated one unfortunately and whether we believe it or not the world is filled with Noura's even our little so called civilized country.

But what dismays me as even though I do see myself as a strong, independent, educated woman who can stand her own ground, when you read the Feminist threads it is filled with so much crap at times that I just can not bring myself to participate. As this is not the type of feminist I want to be or who I want my daughter to be.

They fight over the pettiest little things when there are wider issues where all their energy can be put towards such as Noura's.

The world is changing and it is changing not for the better unfortunately.

I know I am going to be ripped to shreds for my views but thank god we live in a democratic society where I am allowed to air them.

PS. I love Germaine Greer I do not agree on everything she has been saying lately but I love the Germaine Greer who fought long and hard to get feminism to where it is today.

Won't click on a daily mail link.

This is the internet, of course there is crap! Take from it the good stuff and ignore the rest. Although I can't tell from your post whether you are saying that it is crap simply because you don't agree with what is being said. Similarly your dd has the freedom to be whatever type of feminist she wants to be, thank by.

I can't stand GG's recent proclamations if "bad sex' personally.

Discotits · 27/06/2018 06:39

What are you saying exactly? That the focus on the feminist boards is on the wrong thing?
What do you suggest we do to help women in this position abroad?

SoddingUnicorns · 27/06/2018 06:42

I hate GGs latest comments, I’m gutted that someone with a high profile feminist agenda would say such dreadful things. BUT OP is right in that she has played an enormous role in getting feminism where it is today.

OP I agree with some of what you’ve said, although I do believe that tackling “low level” sexism and misogyny is key to dismantling the bigger problems if that makes any sense?

If we challenge all of it, it breaks it down bit by bit. But I am very glad to hear that Noura’s sentence has been commuted although I’d have been happier with a full acquittal.

Also won't click on DM link.

What crap are you referring to? YABU to be vague, not everyone follows all the boards.

Sometimes you have to fight the small issues so people don't take a mile and force through bigger issues.
