Scam email doing the rounds

MySqueeHasBeenSeverelyHarshed · 26/06/2018 20:42

The other day I got an email saying someone had recorded me via my webcam watching porn and doing 'nasty things' and was going to send a video of me watching said porn to all the contacts attached to my email unless I gave them 465 dollars via bitcoin. I was kind of confused as to what they were going to send my contacts as I don't watch porn, I do get occasional pop-ups when I'm pirating content but that's the extent of it. At most my family and friends might have been sent a recording of me drinking tea and rolling my eyes at 'Russian Singles in my area' ads.

Anyway, I looked into it and it's a relatively new scam going around. You know it's a scam because it's usually poorly written, doesn't refer to you by name or give any identifiable info and doesn't share any proof that they have what they claim to have. Apparently a 'legit' blackmailer will always send proof.

So if you do get an email like this some time soon, no need to respond to it. Just a heads up.

Why would you even think this would be real Confused

GummyGoddess · 26/06/2018 20:58

DH gets these emails and finds them funny. Funnier that someone he used to work with panicked and contacted IT about it to ask if they could shut their web cam off.

Are you a man OP?

RebootYourEngine · 26/06/2018 21:44

I always wondered who those people were who got sucked in by these types of scams. Now I know.

Of course it is a scam. I didn't need to Google to know that.

iklboo · 27/06/2018 16:29

I suppose correct response to scammer isn't 'nice try wankpuffin, isn't it past your bedtime'?

MakeMineATwin2 · 11/07/2018 05:30

I’m fed up of being told I need to enlarge my penis.

I quite like my vagina.

sarcasmisnotthelowestformofwit · 11/07/2018 07:24

Yabvvvvu for pirating content. It's stealing.

henpeckedinchief · 11/07/2018 07:35

Alright you lot, was the sarcasm necessary Hmm lots of people ARE scammed by emails like this and all OP is doing is giving a heads up! If you don't need to be told just move on!

LoudestRoar · 11/07/2018 07:40

Not sure why the OP is getting a hard time. People are scammed like this daily, and spreading the word about them is one way to try and beat them.
