DD is almost 5. For background: she loves drawing and getting out her ‘making box’. She is fairly imaginative in her play but is sometimes a bit anxious and is easily scared by things she sees on TV ( just cbeebies - finds things like Peter Rabbit scary - shes not watching horror films!)

I am getting worried about her drawings. She never draws anything with any people in it but seems to mostly draw the same ‘abstract’ pictures. - mostly with grids and horizontal lines in them. often just scribbles which seems unusual given she has good fine motor skills and a fair pencil grip? When she paints she always chooses a ‘gloomy’ palette and her pictures are normally grey or black. I find this odd as she is adamant that her favourite colour is pink. Having said that she is interested in mixing her own colours and maybe everything just ends up dark as she experiments?

AIBU to expect her to sometimes draw people or pictures of things?

If she's an anxious child is she wairy around other people, If she is she's not going to draw people.

She's choosing safe colours she's comfortable using, bright colours will be too out there and daring for her to use.

There's nothing wrong with that picture at all. She's drawing what she's comfortable with. I was expecting some horror scene 😂

I wouldn't worry about it too much at this age. Have you tried showing her how the colour palette works , what colours mixtogether etc ? Or maybe you could ask her what scene she would like to draw. You draw it and both colour in together. How is she with friends ?
