Dp and I were talking to the LL's the other day and they have requested that we not take any bin bags down to the communial bin area except on the days that the bins are taken ie; only take them down Mon evening/Tues morning when the bins are collected on Tuesday. This is to avoid the bags hanging around outside in the heat, which I understand is unpleasant.

The trouble is, we have nowhere else to put them! I really don't want to keep the bins inside the house as it gets really hot inside during the day and I have no desire to have stinky bin bags with old food in sit inside the house on hot days for up to a week at a time and we will end up getting flies etc inside our place. We can't leave the bags outside (eg, in the garden) as animals will rip them open.

Surely the whole point of having an outside area to store the bin bags is having somewhere to store them before the bin men come? What is the point of having it if we are not allowed to use it? I'm happy to double bag the bags and not overfill them to try and minimise the amount of mess that gets into the bin area but wibu to not agree to keep bins inside the house for a week in the summer?

YANBU. The whole point of a big outside bin is to put your smaller inside bins in as they fill up surely?!

Tell them that will be fine but it might cost them a few quid for pest control to get rid of an infestation which happens, and they are to knock some money off your rent as they are removing part of your facilities too

They need to supply you with a metal/animal proof container for your garden. It's unreasonable to have rubbish hanging around the house. If you were 'talking' what was your response?

I'm going to assume you live in flats? The flats on our estate have these communal bin areas, which have large wheelie bins so that they don't end up with bags of honking rubbish on the pavement.

YANBU- homes are too small to keep festering bags of rubbish hanging around.

No, we don't have a green recycling service of any kind Secret, only recycling that gets taken is glass and metal.

I just sort of hmm'ed but didn't agree to it. I wasn't happy about the idea but didn't want to cause a fuss as they are generally good landlords.

When I was a student I rented a room in a very large shared house (think three levels, lots of people living there) and there was, I kid you not, a bin room. Ie., a room where we were meant to store bags of rubbish for the two weeks before they could be put out on the street for the bin collectors.

Needless to say the place was crawling with mice and a few days after I moved in we were given notice to leave as the building had been condemned. Still had to stay there for months and it was utterly revolting.

YANBU, but your landlord is! I know it starts to smell in the sun, but it smells inside the house, too! Not to mention the pests issue.

Most LL's would evict you if you kept rubbish indoors.

When I worked in Children's services, putting all rubbish outside as soon as possible was often in the plan.

It is an endangerment to health and the property (by way of infestation).

My LL asked me to do that once, I ended up with mice in the flat.

That's bollocks. It is what outdoor bin stores are for.

Say that you cannot keep them indoors as they would constitute a health hazard, so you will have to keep putting them in the bin store. Perhaps double bagged as you say.

We've used one of these in the past in the garden. Could you do similar?

Surely you need a bin in the communal bin area? Most blocks of flats have a large dumpster in the bin cupboard for all the black bags to go in. This should reduce mess and smell in the bin cupboard.

You can't store them inside the flat, they will stink. Not sure why the LL thinks that it is better for the flat to stink than the designated bin cupboard to stink!

I think I've read on here before that in some countries there are actual council by-laws about this stuff, but I don't think there are in the UK (I'm assuming you're in the UK).

Tell the LLs about all the potential issues (infestation, it representing a removal of part of your facilities etc). If they dig in, ask if it's enforceable by law. It probably isn't, and they won't have a leg to stand on.

Completely fucking stupid. Tell LL that you've had a think and will not store smelly rubbish in your home until bin day, but he/she is welcome to take it from the bin area and store it in their home till bin day.

Phone the council to find out who supplies bin, individual for each dwelling or communal? Obvs can't leave bags lying around so someone has to supply a bin with a lid

Jurassic, the only comminial bin bit is the thing we are being asked not to use until bin day.

The bin 'cupboard' doesn't have those plastic dumpster things as there is no room but it does have a lid so is reasonably secure. Trouble is when it gets full and won't close fully the animals get in and rip the bags open. Some of the other residents have also been putting rubbish bags in there just open (not tied up at the top), there are a few families with children and nappies etc so imagine it does get pretty horrible in there but that isn't our fault surely!

Do you have an actual bin in your binstore area?

If not I’d buy a wheelie and put it in the garden.
