To go get the antibiotics

I have tonsillitis. I’ve had it before- a lot. I know the signs. Queasy. Exudate on tonsils- which are massive. Hot and cold. High temp. No energy. No runny nose or cough.

Dr has given me AB prescription- but asked me to only fill it if no better by the weekend. (You might kick it... Antibiotic resistance etc etc)

The thing is, I KNOW I’ll end up needing them- and DS is prone to really nasty (hospitalised three times) tonsillitis- so don’t want him to catch it.

AIBU to just go get the drugs?

No, go get them! I would. Don’t put your little one at risk if you don’t need to

It’s also a business critical time for me- not to dripfeed. I have to work on location for 10 days starting next thurs- DS being ill would be a disaster, and, not an exaggeration- if I couldn’t work, I’d lose my job over it

You know yourself OP... The doctor only has guidelines, whereas you have experience. I'm often in a similar situation and I would be getting them asap. Hope you feel better soon.

MissConductUS · 21/06/2018 13:39

Get the antibiotics. If this is a pattern for you, start them immediately. The doc is encouraged to give you that advice but it's not binding.

Three is enough for me... I’m wobbling to the pharmacy now!

Get them, as someone who regularly suffers with strep throat I'd get them!

Wolfiefan · 21/06/2018 13:49

It's not the weekend. You were told to wait. I wouldn't. Antibiotic resistance is a scary thing.

maxthemartian · 21/06/2018 14:02

Go and get them. If the powers that be are serious about combating antibiotic resistance they would stop shoving farm animals full of them. You should not have to suffer because of decades of global mismanagement.

@max

I must admit... those have been my thoughts...

Didn’t think farm animals in the UK were pumped full to antibiotics unless needed for actual illness Confused

longwayoff · 21/06/2018 15:39

Ditto what Max said. Its not over over prescribing by nhs GPs that has caused ab resistance but irresponsible sales by pharmaceutical companies. Besides isnt it the strain of bacteria that becomes resistant not the individual?

agnurse · 21/06/2018 15:42

High temp and no cough are suggestive of a bacterial infection. If you know you'll need it, and you practice good stewardship (i.e. finish ALL of the prescription - don't save any for "next time") I think YANBU.
