Divorce-how do you get your house valued?

I'm starting divorce proceedings. Doing first part DIY, then after decree nisi instructing my solicitor to do financial bit.
She has told me to get my house valued. Hubby has bought a house since we split & needs to get his valued too. He is insisting I pay...I think he is BU!
How do you get your house valued if you are not actually intending to sell?

Phone an estate agent and ask them for a valuation. You don’t then have to sell. Most estate agents offer free valuations. Maybe even get two.

If you are in Scotland you will need to get a home report done.

We had ours valued by getting out 5 local estate agents. We then used the average. I am in england if that helps.

Depends how accurate and official it needs to be. We used an independant estate agent when trying to sell our shared equity house, but they insisted we pay for a rics registered surveyor valuation instead. Similar to what the mortgage company uses when you buy. I'd check before you waste your time sending agents over to do free valuations, but obviously it might not be a waste of time, I've never been in your exact situation

I was in the same situation as you last year. Rang and spoke to an estate agent and explained the issue. Because I'd said it was for a divorce they were going to charge me for the valuation. Apparently if I'd said I was looking at putting it on the market in a few months and wanted a quick valuation I would have got it free. Lesson learnt!!

Depends. If you pay for an independent one they will often ask if you want a low or high valuation, which can be helpful IYSWIM

I had to get an official one with a report and we split the cost.

I got 3 local estate agents out to value mine. Though told them it was because I was thinking of selling

Thank you everyone

Most estate agents will do this for free as they will hope to be given the chance to sell the property when the time comes. Just ignore anyone who tries to charge you - you dont need to lie about the circumstances. Estate agents will also give free valuations if you are thinking if remortgaging.
