To be confused about this fraudulent activity on eBay?

I received a couple of emails confirming my purchase of some digital xbox games and then an email requesting to change my email address on eBay. I have contacted eBay and the bank to report, get a new card etc but I am so confused how they benefit from carrying out the fraud? I have the emails with the code thingys so they can't play the games. Is it part of a bigger scam? Are there any extra steps I should take?

Was it really eBay you contacted? Did you click through links in the emails?

No didn't click any links, Googled then called eBay and the bank.

Sometimes fraudsters try small value and then try a little higher in value until they get stopped. I have seen 4.99. 9.99 14.99 19.99 etc up to 149.99 by same group. The first will be all correct details but after one transaction they can they try to Ames delivery / email details. Stopping card and changing passwords are your safest option. If you have on line banking check it daily for a few weeks. P

SIL had something similar - eBay suggested the seller of the codes was behind the scam.

The emails will have also gone to your eBay account, so if they can access that (they can, as they've used it to pay) then they can access the email.

Well I assume that they tested it first - hence the codes sent to your email, then wanted to completely take over your account after. It does sound quite amateur though. Maybe they can access the codes through directly through eBay? Sometimes emails can be accessed from your eBay message centre too
