Pregnant and having major heartburn. Why is it so bloody expensive. £10 for a bottle.

Generic versions would be cheaper

MorrisDancingViv · 20/06/2018 16:58

Supermarket own brands are much cheaper. We like the sainsbury one

swashbucklecheer · 20/06/2018 16:59

I do sympathise thou I practically drank the stuff when pregnant. I got it on prescription thou and we don't pay prescription charges

kitkatsky · 20/06/2018 16:59

Supermarket own brand or get your midwife to write a prescription

TheFifthKey · 20/06/2018 17:00

You can get it on prescription while pregnant!

Fluffybat · 20/06/2018 17:04

Wasn't sure if superbrand market ones were as good. Tablet supermarket versions I used were rubbish. Did not know you could get it on prescription!

Posted too soon- thanks so much 😊 will midwife be able to prescribe?

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 20/06/2018 17:07

Yes get a prescription from your midwife. Not only is it a medical condition, it's also pregnancy related. Use your free prescription! I drank gallons of it with all my babies - it's the only thing that worked for me and yes it is expensive.

mistermagpie · 20/06/2018 17:10

I found the Tesco one cheaper but actually, the only thing that touched my heartburn was ranitidine which I got prescribed (you can buy that too though). If you're really suffering then I can recommend it.

justlurking1 · 20/06/2018 17:11

Just ask in your pharmacy - they did it on minor ailments for me. A big bottle once a week!

Armchairanarchist · 20/06/2018 17:13

Ask for ranitidine on prescription, as long as you aren't in the first trimester.

bsbabas · 20/06/2018 17:15

Ginger tea will get rid of the heartburn

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 20/06/2018 17:15

Free prescription for Gaviscon? I find that shocking, sorry.

In an ideal world, yes of course, everything would be free, but that's not one of the priority medication and you can get it cheap anyway.

Drchinnery · 20/06/2018 17:17

Own brand versions are exactly the same ingredients and fraction of the price! I drank it by the gallon when I was pregnant I had chronic heartburn 24/7!

SamanthaH92 · 20/06/2018 17:19

Supermarket own brands are the same. I always use morrisons or sainsburys. Even the tablets like tums from morrisons are just as good! I was told they don't do prescriptions for it any more. Cheap enough to buy own brand anyways x

expatinscotland · 20/06/2018 17:20

Of course it's a priority medication. I have permanent damage to my oesophagus from acid reflux in pregnancy. I now have GERD and take omeprazole on prescription - GERD can lead to oesophageal cancer.

Somewhereovertheroad · 20/06/2018 17:20

@Fluffybat make sure any Supermarket or own brands say can be taken in pregnancy or ask for Peptac by name.

FlyingDandelionSeed · 20/06/2018 17:39

Of course it's a priority medication.

Absolutely agreed, the combo of ranitidine/gaviscon (on prescription) is the only thing that allowed me to sleep in the last trimester as without it I would have been in agony and probably caused permanent damage to my body. Even then I had to sleep on a 45 degree incline!

ScreamingValenta · 20/06/2018 17:41

I agree, it's expensive. The cheaper supermarket ones only seem to come in aniseed flavour Sad.

x2boys · 20/06/2018 17:42

is it the gaviscon advance? i used to get it on precription, during pregnancy , there are cheaper versions but i preferred the advance stuff

QuestionableMouse · 20/06/2018 17:46

@ikeepaforkinmypurse
Not everyone can afford even the supermarket stuff. It's £6/7 a bottle in my area. Not exactly cheap.

SamanthaH92 · 20/06/2018 17:57

Morrisons do a big pack of the fruit flavoured tablets exactly like tums for about £3 a pack. You can take them wjilst pregnant

SirHubzALot · 20/06/2018 17:57

Omg go to Home and Bargain. It's £1.50 a bottle for equally as good own brand.

Alternatively get a prescription for litres of the stuff at once.

expatinscotland · 20/06/2018 18:05

If someone is on Gaviscon the Tums probably are not cutting it.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 20/06/2018 18:07

QuestionableMouse if you decide to get pregnant and can't even afford to spend a tenner on medication, it's not looking good for your kids lifestyle! How are you planning on feeding the poor child?
