to not get this about pack lunches..

son today was told in school he is not allowed to eat oreos at lunch time. as they are "chocolate." its hardly a flaming mars bar! and considering on the school menu os chocolate cake, ice cream etc. aibu to think ots ridiculous?

Our school have a "no sweets" rule. No sweets during break time or lunch time. No one argues with it - we all agree that sweets are a treat for at home, not for everyday at school.
Send a lot of strawberries or something. Sweet but good.

I think it’s all very stupid.

I gave my dd a sausage roll instead of a sandwich (because she only likes two types of sandwich) and apparently that was against the law!

My DD is far less healthy since starting school dinners so YANBU. I wish they could see the irony of not letting her have 10p bag of haribo on packed lunch versus slice of cake now!

I don’t know about your LA but ours gives extra funding to “health promoting” schools and nurseries. So the rules are strict, because it brings extra cash in which benefits the children.

Packed lunch vs pack lunch

Is this a regional thing? Or a misunderstood thing that always crops up on MN a la marshmallow/marshmellow. I’ve always said packed lunch - do others say pack lunch?

They are chocolate biscuits so if they’re banned then I can see why they said no.

Makes zero sense when every school dinner comes with a dessert.

When my teens were at primary, no sweets, cakes, biscuits or crisps were allowed. School lunches usually involved a flapjack or Oat biscuit for dessert though so it was quite unfair.

Although I think it’s a sensible rule, it should have extended to school lunches. Junk food has no place in schools, and certainly not sweets.

Hate hate hate this. My DD has snack time...we can send her in with cheese crackers, yoghurt, fruit etc but no biscuits or crisps. She can however purchase cartons of apple juice or chocolate milk, chocolate chip cookies or popcorn from the school.

I got pulled in for putting a small chocolate bar in her otherwise decent lunch box...yet when she is dinners she can have ice cream bars, cake or the like for her pudding.

I'm all for promoting healthy eating IF it is done across the board not just directed at those of us who send in pack up. I also hate this idea that healthy just means fruit/veg/pasta/jacket potato that we seem to have here. Healthy means variety!

If you lot could see how many children refuse to eat the pudding you might think differently... There is zero sugar in most of it, which appeals to me because I don't have a sweet tooth, but at least half of the children don't eat any of it. The only proper sweet thing I've ever seen is butterscotch tart which is about once a half term. And they don't eat that either! The puddings aren't the sugary gooey things you're all imagining I can assure you.

Pack lunches are confusing! Buscuits are allowed but not chocolate. Is a club a biscuit or a chocolate? Is a KitKat?
They have fruit, veg sticks (carrots cucumber and peppers) and raised plus a yoghurt and a ham or chicken SW. Not sure how a biscuit is a crime is teaching healthy eating as it should be teaching about a balanced diet.

Our school us pretty reasonable no nuts Inc nutella otherwise a balanced lunch box is ok Inc chocolate if it's on school dinner menu it's considered ok for lunchbox,

Other week we got back late mon night from hols back to school Tues minimal food and sent nut free choc spread sandwich apple orange and cheese dipper thingy I was embarrassed bit shit lunch but as he refuses school dinners and that was contents of our frudge that morning (or freezer for bread)

Have heard stories of kids taking 3 packs of crisps or multi pk of twix so can see how they need rules.

I understood school dinner treats like cakes etc are made with healthier option ingredients

Also I call it a packed lunch as in a lunch that is packed into something however here in east Midlands (I am from sussex) they call it a "pack-up" been here 15yrs and nope not using it

That seems massively contradictory. So if you sent him in with chocolate cake it wouldn’t be allowed but the school are serving it to the kids that have a hotlunch?! It’s a sensible rule to say no chocolate/sweets etc. but surely it needs to apply to all meals eaten at lunchtime. So YANBU.

The ‘chocolate cake’ at school lunch time is rather grim stuff. It’s low sugar, low fat, and low taste.

School chocolate cake is not the same as actual chocolate cake. Ours is made with beetroot and next to no sugar, but it's surprisingly nice.

I think it's daft that you can't send in one of those little packets of two biscuits, but the school chocolate cake is irrelevant.

I have the same gripe. My kids think you should get pudding after every meal because they spent 3 years getting pudding with their school lunch.

Oreos are not chocolate biscuits. If you want to get down to brass tacks they are cocoa biscuits, they have no chocolate in them IIRC. They are chocolate flavoured, yes.
Our school has a no sweets no chocolate and no nuts rule. But some puddings on the menu is more than I used to give, including coconut ( a nut, no??) items so I have relaxed a little and have put slices of cake in the kids packed lunch, similar to that of the menus. It's a bit weird.
