Just as the title says my plan would turn have everyone who has no criminal record and of sound mind and body over the age of 21 to be enetered into a sweepstake and names of the primister and the following cabinet post to be filled

Once your term is up your name gets removed from the sweepstakes their are no forfights

Everyone has a chance it crosses all genders, race and age groups we would have true representation

That is all

And it would put to bed career politicians

I recently read a good book that basically proposed this (albeit with a few more conditions / caveats), as a far preferable way of organising things. It was called against democracy, and I’d thoroughly recommend it!

TooMinty · 16/06/2018 21:45

I totally agree with no career politicians. Anyone who wants to be a politician should instantly be disqualified. My idea is that anyone who is shit hot at a job should be made to be a cabinet minister for that area. Eg best head teacher would be minister for education, great nurse gets to be minister for health etc.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 16/06/2018 21:45

The problem is, I know a lot of absolutely idiotic adults who, while technically of sound mind, would be truly useless lumps of broccoli in the political arena. No one would elect them, and with good reason.

Also - if you're not fighting for re-election at the end of your term in office what would stop people from just making policies to suit their own interests at the expense of the nation?

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 16/06/2018 21:45

Most people haven’t got a clue though, look at what happens when there is a -Brexit- referendum.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 16/06/2018 21:47

I can’t even work out the striketrough, how would I be supposed to run a country :D

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 16/06/2018 21:47

I think this is actually the system in some country. I remember reading about it. What would that system be called?

LighthouseSouth · 16/06/2018 21:52

OP, congratulations on making our current political system look better than I thought it was.

Hmm.yes shocking people had a binary vote and voted Hmm how very dare the proles vote the wrong way Confused

This way everyone has a chance regardless of where you went to school because all cabinet posts will be filled this way you will get balance in views

or as a default the cast of gordie shore

Most people of sound mind over the age of 21 would be dangerously ill-informed and ill-equipped for any such role. I certainly would be!

Randomly choosing political officials is known as "sortition". The Ancient Greeks used it, as did some other states in history, and it's still how we select jurors.

My 2 pence: I'm not sure it would help much, as I expect it would be "captured" by lobbyists and vested interests who will influence the randomly chosen ministers and become in essence the true government.

Metoodear · 16/06/2018 22:07

That would all be banned no lobbying just the sweepstakes

Oh and there would be a whipping with a cod or possibly a haddock if the fishing quotas allow if their was any misbehaviour

LighthouseSouth · 16/06/2018 22:09

This isn't serious? We're playing "who had the biggest plate of Crazy for dinner" right?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 16/06/2018 22:09

Stephen Fry explained it, pretty much as safari has just done!

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 16/06/2018 22:12

I've always thought democracy was overrated. Except of course for the places that don't have democracy and it's a nightmare.
Thing is, there really should be some kind of general knowledge exam befoee abyone is allowed to vote. And perhaps especially before they're actually allowed to stand for election. Democracy would work so much better if all voters were actually fully informed.

Failing that, let's go for the OPs method.
