DS10 has asd, today he wanted to meet his friends at the park so they cou,d make you tube videos, it’s the first time in ages he wanted to do this so I took him and just cycled around whilst he was with his friends, I felt bad as all the other parents weren’t there. I felt like a lemon waiting around. I was thinking next time I would drop him off and then come back at a set time to pick him up. The park is roughly 10 minutes walk from the house, less if you bike it. When I mentioned this to DP he totally disagreed saying that DS isn’t ready for that, and he’s worried in case some other kids approached them and took his phone. They all had phones and there was about 6 of them. And tbh he never even cared I was there and only come back to me once and that was for a drink.
I feel I can leave him there for a while he would be alright, AIBU?

He will need freedom at some point, I wonder if you could just leave him for 15 minutes or so initially and then take it from there

I suppose he'll be going up to secondary school in a year and a bit, and travelling to and fro on his own? I think you probably do need to start building up his independence now, so he's confident when the time comes, and when he wants to go to the shops or the library or wherever, on his own or with friends.

Maybe compromise and build up to it?

I think you are right. My ds started going to park 10 mins away at 10. He hasn’t got a phone to steal. We go through the rules regularly.
When does your dh think he will be ready? With senior school looming it has to come some time.
