To ask for your mid 40’s weight loss tips

I am desperate- my metabolism has suddenly given up and nothing I do results in weight loss and I do need to lose around 10lbs as my bmi is 25.5
I eat reasonably healthy - I am a dairy free vegetarian (I eat eggs) and I try to minimise starchy carbs as much as poss. I dip in and out of 5:2 and have had some success but have found it harder with hormone shifts for some reason.
I exercise 3-4 times a week- mix of running and exercise dvds and walk a fair amount.
I also don’t drink much booze- once or twice a month.

But NOTHING is working- I just stay the same weight. I do want to stay slim - I am a 12/14 and 5 foot 8 but weigh 11 stone 11 and want to get down to around 11 stone which would be my ideal-ish weight.

Aibu to ask you what has worked for you. This is what I have eaten today:

Break- 40g porridge, raisins, few nuts, oat milk

Snacks- dried apricots, bread sticks & houmous. Packet of Pom bears

Lunch- boiled egg & slice rye bread

Tea- tofu & veg stir fry

Is that too much food? That’s a normal day for me.

Am genuinely despairing- I don’t want middle age spread!!!

Houmus is very high in calories, and dried fruit is very high in sugar, so your snacks aren't helping you.

I've had a good success with Slimming World, their focus is on filling up with 'free' food i.e. low-cal veggies, salad and avoiding too much fat like cheese and butter.

I started low carbing almost 4weeks ago i dont measure anything Ive just cut out bread/pasta/rice and potatoes and I've lost a stone. (5'5 mid 40's and was 11.' 7) I'm surprised but I'll take it 😂

annandale · 10/06/2018 18:21

Myfitnesspal. Basically you need to eat less. Your snacks are all very high calorie so I would have a ton more green veg in the meals and cut the snacks. I would guess your snack category above is adding up to something around 500 calories so it's an extra meal.

I personally do better with eggs for breakfast but porridge is fine - why raisins though? You're likely adding another 150 calories with those, what about a tangerine or a few apple slices instead?

I lost 4 stone in my mid forties by only eating when I was hungry.
I know that sounds really obvious..

Also, I cut out alcohol completely.

Where I might have had 5 potatoes, I took one or two.

I avoided biscuits cakes and sweets completely, but if I did have some, I just got back on the wagon the next day.

Ditch the carbs. Look at dr Michael moseleys Blood Sugar Diet.

habibihabibi · 10/06/2018 18:25

Low carb, stop snacking and drink lots of water.

TriedToLikeOlives · 10/06/2018 18:31

Minimal carbs here to.

1 slice of bread a day. No pasta/potatoes/rice etc.

Chicken or fish for dinner with either a huge salad or veggies.

If I fancy an ice cream on a hot day I eat half & put the other half back in the freezer (or give to DP to finish)

I cycle everywhere I can

I’ve lost 2 stone in 18 months & have managed to keep it off

I do still enjoy a glass of wine

Doidontimmm · 10/06/2018 18:31

Too much sugary snacks & high carbs.

I have:

Porridge
Snack - 6 nuts or orange or graze box (around 120 Cals) or sugar free jelly
Salad for lunch
Snack as above
Fish/meat/veg/couscous or rice
Hot chocolate or protein bar

mooncuplanding · 10/06/2018 18:34

Yep
Ditch the carbs

I’m 43 and 8.5 stone (5ft6)

Was 9.5 stone until I ditched the carbs and was massively exercising and calorie counting that wouldn’t shift my midriff flab

I eat during one hour of the day. No other time. Eat whatever I want. Carbs, healthy fats, treats. I stop when I feel full. If I am on holiday or it is a special occasion I just eat when I am hungry with no restrictions. I am 44 and in perimenopause. I tried every diet going and no results. This has been a slow and steady weightloss and I rarely feel hungry now. Read The Obesity Code by Dr Jason Fung. If 1 hour a day is too restrictive look at the Delay Don't Deny FB page. Good luck!

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 10/06/2018 18:43

oh and the 5.2 diet is really good as well.

Rshard · 10/06/2018 18:46

Another low carb eater here, come over to the low carb boot camp. We’re about to start week 5 but people ajwsts join along the way.

Katiekattty · 10/06/2018 18:53

From what you’ve posted for your meals it looks your under eating and your metabolism has slowed down because you aren’t giving your body enough fuel. You need to increase your protein throughout the day. If you have a Fitbit or a activity tracker I would try and find out how many calories it says you’re burning throughout the day then increase by 500 to kick start your metabolism again for a week. Then take 200-300 calories out and watch for two weeks and see how you do. You can try adding a dairy free protein shake to increase your protein.
