I usually roll my eyes when asked. We've been together for 15 years and have two children. We are very happy together. We might choose to get married, we might not, but there have been other priorities before now.
I think the older generations tend to ask as it's still a little unusual to them, but the world is constantly changing, I don't blame the.

nobody else's business, although for the sake of 15 mins in the registry office it does give a lot of legal protection.

I'd like to see you use the correct you're but we can't all have what we want!

  1. Yes - people ask a lot!
2.All generations - not specifically older people.
  1. Just say It's not something I'm bothered about.

  1. Sometimes. I find people more ask my DP actually, which I hate. It sort of implies that I’m desperately waiting for him to ask me.
  2. No, just anyone who is already married. It’s like you’re devaluing their choices by not making the same ones.
  3. I don’t have a good answer. I could talk at length about why neither of us are bothered and how I’m financially stable on my own but I don’t have a quick, punchy reply. But I do usually make clear that it’s a joint ambilevence and I’m NOT waiting desperately for a big proposal.

We used to get this, but after a mortgage, a child, another house move etc people have stopped asking. A lot of people assume we're married now anyway, I think.

A friend of mine is almost 70 and has been with her partner for 30+ years, but they've never married. (She was engaged before and he was married before)

Whenever anyone asks her why she never got married she replies "Just lucky I suppose" Grin

Hilda I love that answer! I'm stealing that.
