Worrying about coach transfer with baby

Mummyinoz · 06/06/2018 22:06

Going on holiday to Spain and have a coach transfer included. Will be travelling with 1yo baby and I’m worried about travelling with them on my knee for safety reasons.

I’d prefer to hire a car or take a taxi and take a car seat with us.

Husband wants to go on the coach.

I know statistically that coaches crash very infrequently but having my baby unrestrained is making me uneasy.

YANBU. I have the same dilemma soon with DS 10mo. Transfer is over an hour so I'm debating hiring a car with a baby seat instead.

I'll be interested to see what others come back with.

We took our then 6 month old to Lanzarote and the coach transfer was fine. it was approx 30 mins.

Take a car seat?

SchrodingersCaterpillar · 06/06/2018 22:24

In those situations I put the baby/toddler in the ergobaby sling and strap myself in, obciously not as safe as a car seat but they are pretty secure in those, so long as you don’t put the seat belt across their back which could cause damage in an impact.

FannyFaceAche · 06/06/2018 22:24

Blimey, I wouldn't have even thought of that!
Can you contact the company and ask if they do special belts for babies? Like you get on aeroplanes? Or maybe there's a restraint you can buy yourself?

Mummyinoz · 06/06/2018 22:25

Neverender I’ve looked at this and the coach will likely only have retractable lap belts (if any) which aren’t suitable for fitting a car seat

If you use a sling, make sure the seatbelt is under the sling between you and the baby, not over baby,
If you take a car seat, baby will still be safer in it even if it's not strapped in to position.

Mummyinoz · 06/06/2018 22:34

Although the sling is a good idea I don’t think my baby will be happy in it for the whole time as transfer is 1-2 hours. Also apparently children under 2 don’t get their own seat on the coach so looks like I couldn’t even take a car seat

Why does your hubby only want to go on the coach OP?

Peterrabbitscarrots · 06/06/2018 22:39

I would find driving an unfamiliar car in a new country on the opposite side of the road more risky tbh

I was in a coach crash in Spain fairly recently, I know it's a rare occurrence and you think it won't happen (it never crossed my mind before ) but it did happen to me and I wouldn't risk it. Having said that cars can crash too but I'd rather be strapped in.
