Is this viral or bacterial pink eye?

Sorry this is in the wrong thread but wasn't getting much response in the health thread so I thought perhaps some of you have experienced this? I am currently on antibiotics for an ear and throat infection and because I have a temperature as well. Both of my eyes are very sore and red, the pharmacist and also doctor said it's conjunctivitis and took a swab but to continue the eye drops... however they're just not working!

I've been taking the eyedrops since Saturday, it's now Tuesday and they've not touched the sides. My symptoms are

  1. both eyes are angry red where the whites are
  2. excessive tears
  3. stuck together with dried up discharge in the morning
  4. sometimes itchy

So I don't know? I was still told to continue the drops but it's now been 4 days, tomorrow is my last day as I can only take them for 5 days and they've just not worked! Can anyone else share some advice for me? Sad when is this awful thing going to go!

When I had bacterial my face was swollen and i was in pain. Not sure whether they were specific symptoms but the antibiotics honestly worked so quickly, it was about 12 hours and it was a million times better.

That's what my friend said. She said within a day hers was 10 times better... mine is nowhere near! Despite taking them rigorously and mine is exactly how it is when it started on Thursday :(

Sounds like hayfever to me. Early June is a common time for a grass allergy to flare up.

gamerchick · 05/06/2018 07:22

There's also allergic conjunctivitis, I know from bitter experience and the giving up of my favourite facecream. But could suggest hayfever I don't doubt.

It’s awful, you have my sympathies. I’m usually quite against anti biotics but I think in this case it’s almlst worth trying to see whether it clears them up. As far as I am
Aware, there is no way to confirm whether it’s bacterial or not.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 05/06/2018 07:30

I already suffer from hay fever and I've never had anything like this happen to me before :(

Do you have an eye hospital near?

I occasionally get iritis, it is painful and 'sticky' so might be worth checking out.

Initially my Dr thought it was conjunctivitis but it got worse. I now know to get treatment ASAP and bypass my GP to go to the eye A and E.

If it's viral then it can take a couple of weeks to clear (same with bacterial really, occasionally antibiotics are necessary but mostly, the body can fight it without). Sounds like you've had a real triple whammy of bugs all at once. Hope you're better soon. If it worsens or doesn't clear within 2 weeks, you will need to see somebody.

My DH, DD and I all had a weird virus a few weeks ago that gave us a lingering sore throat, slightly upset tummy and the eye symptoms you describe. It was so weird. Went away by itself after a while. I had the eye thing for almost 2 weeks, it was so annoying.
