I'm suffering through a horribly sore throat and scratchy voice and haven't been able to eat breakfast or lunch. On the possibly vain hope that I'm feeling better by tonight, can I have your comfort food suggestions? What really cheers you up when you're down?

(I'm a vegetarian btw but tell me your meat options anyway cos I am good at finding dupes for most things!)

Macaroni cheese!

ChesterFuckingDraws · 04/06/2018 12:52

Macaroni cheese! And it's soft enough to not hurt your throat!

Aldi coconut water ice lollies are amazing too and they'd help your sore throat too.

I'm also vegetarian and although I haven't yet got around to making it myself, I have heard this is very good (Nigella's sweet potato macaroni cheese):

Macaroni or homemade soup

SunnySomer · 04/06/2018 13:00

I was also going to say macaroni cheese. I like it with tomatoes sliced on top, then grilled

AornisHades · 04/06/2018 13:02

Tomato soup
Roast potatoes & gravy
Chips, egg and baked beans
Scrambled egg on toast

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/06/2018 13:02

mashed potato, with lots of butter. And with fried eggs - the yolks would be fine but the whites wouldn't be kind to your throat.

theunsure · 04/06/2018 13:03

Macaroni cheese, I think that's what I'm making for dinner tonight.

TammySwansonTwo · 04/06/2018 13:05

get hold of the Anna Mae’s Mac and cheese recipe book - it’s the best mac and cheese I’ve ever had and there’s loads of good stuff for variations in there including veggie options

angelopal · 04/06/2018 13:06

Hummous, Heinz tomato soup, macaroni cheese for savoury. Ice cream for sweet or custard.

HyacinthsBucket70 · 04/06/2018 13:07

Baked potato from the oven so its really soft and fluffy. Bit of butter and melted cheese, with a half tin of low sugar baked beans. Heaven!

Or tomato soup.... when I worked in a nursing home, we used to soak bread and butter in it so it was really soft for the older residents with a soft diet and it was a good way of getting some calories in.

Or ice cream.........that's the best for a sore throat.

BuntyII · 04/06/2018 13:08

Vegetable soup with dumplings and fresh bread followed by home made rice pudding.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 04/06/2018 13:08

So many great suggestions! Thank you! Macaroni cheese is sounding very very tempting...

No dairy for a sore throat! A hearty veg soup? Comfort for me as my mum always made me one when I was ill when little.

PebbleTissueScissors · 04/06/2018 13:23

M&S Gastropub Shepherd's pie - but that won't help as you are vegetarian.

Shepherd's pie is great - mash potato mmm.

Lasagne is also good comfort food.

Bake a potato, cut it in half, scoop out middle into a bowl carefully leaving shell intact, add grated cheese, splash of milk and butter for consitency you like and salt and pepper, mix it all together so it smooth and put it back in the shells.

Sprinkle with more cheese and put back in oven till cheese on top has melted. Soooo good.

You can add other things you like into the mash if you like - like chopped onion or chives.

BarryTheKestrel · 04/06/2018 13:25

Mashed potato is my go to when I have a sore throat. With whatever you like. I often go for peas and gravy or fish in parsley sauce, depending on my mood.

Highhorse1981 · 04/06/2018 13:29

Big bowl of steamed broccoli drizzled with soy sauce and a dollop of wasabi.

Love love love
