So we were out today and my husband bought my daughter a dvd. He paid cash in morrisons. I didn't search the title at any point. I didn't even say the title. She watched it in the car on the way home and tonight this ad has popped up on my feed.
Spying. Pure and simple. I had always wondered if it was a myth but it's convinced me.

Facebook is spying.

How did she watch it..was it on a laptop which had Facebook logged in?

TulipsInAJug · 03/06/2018 22:45

Freaky Confused

Chinnyreckoning · 03/06/2018 22:51

Just on a portable dvd player
Very basic.

I agree. Not always Facebook but I've had ads pop up for stuff I've spoken about that day.

BeansandSausages · 03/06/2018 22:54

It's just a targeted ad. They know how old your child is and many many other things- it's obviously a good target too as you had bought it.

If their intention was to make you buy it they'd surely know you already had it, if they were spying?

Yes Facebook is creepy. I've been into the realms of grey Facebook and know what I'm doing with targeting, profiling etc. All this is is that.

I was watching finding Dory with my nephew and he asked what type of fish Dory was anyway I started typing in to Google What type and it (Google)finished off the rest of the sentence by saying "of fish is Dory". The only plausible explanation which i suppose logically Makes sense is thst my Now Box which we watched finding Dory on is connected up to the WiFi, so perhaps that's a common question Google gets asked when theyre watching this movie. I hope that makes sense. I'm rubbish at explaining things.

Yep I believe this now too...my dp asked me other the phone about a specific type of something. After I put the phone down and went on Facebook an ad popped up for it, I'd never searched for this product ever, and our phones aren't connected in any way even if he had searched it. He also doesn't have facebook.

PatriciaHolm · 03/06/2018 23:02

Early man has just been released on DVD - I'm getting it on my feed and my kids are teens.

Whilst social media does undoubtedly take from what else you do online, it's not up to following you on cctv monitoring your offline cash purchases.

TeeniefaeTroon · 03/06/2018 23:15

I typed "what ty" and even from just that, "what type of fish is Dory" was the second result.

Chinnyreckoning · 03/06/2018 23:15

Ok...i haven't seen any other movies advertised. Greatest showman etc etc.

It is advertised the very day it is bought which seems like odd timing. Dh May have said the title when chatting to dd.
It just seems very unlikely and very odd.

Also the other week a pupil was telling me about a horse riding event she was at...for the next few days I got ads for eventing, horse brushes, feeding nets etc

I am a firm believer that we are being monitored😁 I'd better get a tinfoil hat made.

But you are now all reading this thread so the algorithm will link it to this!!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 03/06/2018 23:19

It's not very good if it's advertising stuff you have already bought.

TheClitterati · 03/06/2018 23:20

I've had random stuff I e Bly talked about but never googled pop up on my ads. Most recently talking with kids about Gerry g a football and then football amazon ads pop up.

I've been talking about and looking for random items for my job on my work computer and facebook ads for those items have popped up later on. My work computer is in no way connected to my Facebook or personal accouts as I've onky started there. It's very strange!

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 03/06/2018 23:24

If it's any help, about 2 hours ago I was doing an online sainsburys shop and that DVD popped up as a suggestion. I've never heard of it as my children are all adults.

But I have heard many people with similar 'tracking conversation' stories, I'm just not convinced this is one.

Ringsender2 · 03/06/2018 23:27

Key words in your conversation are picked up by the Mic on your phone. It's not necessarily Facebook, but another installed app that you've agreed can access your mic. You can change access permissions within apps management.

Ringsender2 · 03/06/2018 23:34

Actually,.I can't see how to turn off permissions. Lots of my apps have got access to my sd card as well as camera and mic. Some have permission to delete stuff from my SD card!! I can't believe how much privacy I've ceded!!!

adviceonthepox · 03/06/2018 23:41

I was in the car with my OH. Neither of us using our phones. His in his pocket mine in my bag in the boot. I told him that McDonald's deliver now via Uber eat and if the kids find out they will want it all the time lol. Got home went straight on my phone on Facebook, the 2nd thing on my newsfeed was an advert to get McDonald's from Uber eats. My microphone is switched off and no apps have access. I have no idea if it was coincidence or something more sinister. Freaked me out though!!

bellylaughs · 03/06/2018 23:42

Yesterday there was a man collecting for RNLI outside the supermarket. Neither of us mentioned the name of the organisation. I gave him some cash, he gave me a badge and I thought no more about it until an hour after I got home and an ad for RNLI came up on my FB timeline. Don’t usually get charity ads and certainly not RNLI ads. I actually Commented to my DH as it’s not the first creepy “coincidence” I’ve had.
