Fence guy. Meant to come at 0900 today. Phones to say will be 20 minutes late. Fair enough.

Turns up at 1030 having done his shopping saying it was a "lunch break". Then needs to go to the shop for himself. Gets back at 1130.

By 1245 no work done except moving a few bits of wood says drill is charging. He is texting in the garden. I ask if he is going to start work. He says he is now on his lunch break and has an important text to send.

He is on a daily rate for 8 hours work. I have to leave house at 1830 tonight.

Did you actually tell him off? I can’t see where you did. Personally i’d Tell him go pack up and leave. He wouldn’t be getting paid at all.

NewPapaGuinea · 02/06/2018 13:15

I’d sack him off and get someone more professional.

PorkyPortia · 02/06/2018 13:16

I’d tell him to go too

LifeBeginsAtGin · 02/06/2018 13:17

This is why you have to agree a set price then he'll do it quicker.

We had a decorator who does daily rates and I always feel if he worked a bit faster, arrived on time and left on time the job would be finished quicker. There's always phone calls and texts, and going for supplies. Just turn up with the stuff you need at 8.30 and WORK. The thing is is does a good job, but it could always be better. So we decorate ourselves now.

FASH84 · 02/06/2018 13:18

Yep get rid, you need price work not day rate

ToPlanZ · 02/06/2018 13:19

Don't pay him for the time he didn't work. Simple

Orchidflower1 · 02/06/2018 13:20

I’d say you’ll pay him the equivalent of 30 min work as that’s all he’s done. Assume he’s used your power to charge tools that should be charged already. Either pay him for materials he has bought ( ask to see the receipt) or keep materials you got fit someone more reliable. Try check a trade.com

UnapologeticallyUnhinged · 02/06/2018 13:20

Agreed! Never pay for a daily rate. Pay for the job. Sack him off now whilst he hasn’t done anything and get someone else to do it.

Firstnameterms · 02/06/2018 13:21

I would tell him “you do realise that I’m not starting your hourly rate until you actually start some work don’t you?”

strayducks18 · 02/06/2018 13:22

You haven't told him off though really. If he's on a day rate then you are being mugged. Ask for a fixed price or tell him to pack up and jog on.

maxthemartian · 02/06/2018 13:24

We had a fixed price for getting our fencing done. They cracked right on with it.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 02/06/2018 13:29

I’d have told him to go at half 10 tbh. Turning up with his shopping. Hmm

Tistheseason17 · 02/06/2018 13:31

Only pay him for the hours worked today then sack.him

Buggeroffalo · 02/06/2018 13:32

Bin him. Ask him to leave now. He’s more than demonstrated his work ethic and reliability. You’ll be saving yourself a whole load of cash and stress if you just get rid now and find somebody else.

Ruffian · 02/06/2018 13:33

I wouldn't trust someone who behaves like that to do a proper job.

Mightyfedup · 02/06/2018 13:34

I said I am not stupid and as he won't get the fence done in one day it was pointless him staying as he already could not do 8 hours.

He has now cracked on but won't pay until job finished and 8 hours done. It is for 3 fence panels but desperate as my dog could escape...

SilverHairedCat · 02/06/2018 13:35

Chuck him out and tell him he's getting nothing for the day. Day rate piss taker and he knows it.

NellMangel · 02/06/2018 13:36

Taking the piss. I'd tell him to pack his stuff and leave.

chickenpox100 · 02/06/2018 13:37

My workman was pulling up the floorboards at 8am this morning. He's being paid for the job.

Currywurstmitpommes · 02/06/2018 13:38

8 hours for 3 fence panels? We had 3 replaced recently and the blocks was only here for 2 hours max - and one of them had to be made to measure!

gillybeanz · 02/06/2018 13:42

He'd have left my property by 10.30 when he turned up an hour and a half late.
Let them take the piss and they will, you need to learn how to be firm with piss takers like this, or they'll be more of them that take you for a ride.

TheMaddHugger · 02/06/2018 14:01

3 panels ?????? Unbelievable Shock

Coyoacan · 02/06/2018 15:17

Uuf, it is the same story all around the world. I live in Mexico and we all watched agog as a three workmen took four days to paint a wall. It was so obvious that they were being paid by the hour.

NewPapaGuinea · 02/06/2018 15:53

Is he doing posts as well? Even so, 3 panels and 4 posts shouldn’t take a full day for a pro.
