Ripped jeans. Why?

This is going to out me as terribly middle-aged or staid or something (well I am happy to admit to middle-aged) but I look at the jeans people wear which have been specially ripped / pre-distressed or whatever they call it and I just don't get it.

I am sure some of these cost several times what I pay for a pair of jeans but if I happened to rip a pair or go through on the knee they would go straight in the bin.

I realize they must be fashionable and desirable but I just don't understand why?

If it was only young teenagers I wouldn't necessarily expect to understand, but I now realize I am seeing people in their 30s and even 40s in jeans that look like the cat has had a go at them.

is it me? I am only 55 not a geriatric. Just what is the attraction?

I'm 40 and I don't like them at all. I saw a girl wearing some that were more rips than denim! My dp and I always say, "she could do with a needle and thread" when we see them! I'm very aware this makes me sound like my nan but I'd rather my clothes were intact.

I think they look quite nice. Not a fan though. I'm terribly sensitive to cold and can't deal with cold knees and warm thighs Grin

Not my business even if I hated them.

I bought a used pair with holes in from a shop in Camden Market in the late 80's/early 90's, spent the afternoon with a friend trying them all on, but when I wore them they just didn't fit and I have wanted a pair ever since. Had no luck with the new pre-ripped ones either and still want some. However I prefer the old ones with normal wear to the over ripped ones.

On the other hand, cold shoulder tops look as if they ran out of fabric and scruffy, whereas a nice pair of worn out jeans looks comfortable to me.

I wear them with fishnets underneath that show through the ‘gaps’

There is a real trend for visible mending at the moment. I like it and have salvaged several pairs of favourite trousers with bright Liberty patches and sashiko stitching
