I'm at the end of my tether

I started a new job only a few weeks ago and I'm reaching breaking point!

Basically, I'm sat next to a manager who plays (awful) pop music all day. I cannot Work when I have music blaring out like this. The job is one that requires a lot of reading and concentration and I'm finding it unbearable. It takes me longer to complete tasks because of this noise.

No one else seems to mind it though, and I feel I'll be burning bridges as a newbie if I complain. But the thought of listening to this for 8 hours a day makes me want to hand my notice in to be honest. AIBU?

Do you have to talk to anyone to do your job?

Can you wear earplugs?

MrsMozart · 29/05/2018 19:14

Headphones and your own music of choice.

Could you use earphones if you don't want to rock the boat?

tootstastic · 29/05/2018 19:17

Noise-cancelling headphones until you feel a bit more secure in your job. Then complain.

I've tried listening to my own music but still find it distracting.

Ear plugs aren't really an option as I have to listen out for the phone....

Goodness - I am quite noise sensitive and that would drive me around the bend. Can you programme your phone to light up to attract your attention when it rings, then wear ear plugs?

tootstastic · 29/05/2018 19:51

In that case I think you'll have to firstly ask them nicely to stop. If that doesn't work, raise a formal grievance with the next level of management up (discreetly video at different times on different days in advance so that you can prove noise levels aren't a one-off) Meanwhile, start looking for another job.

Good luck!
