To take DS on holiday with a temperature?

20 month old DS temperature kept peaking to 38.5 yesterday, was a bit grumbly but gave calpol and wasn’t too bad. Was running round like a nutter till late as he couldn’t sleep.

Woke in the night with temp at 38.9. Calpol and then this morning it’s 38.5. No other obvious signs of illness other than he is drinking a lot.

We have a 6 hour car journey today to U.K. holiday destination. Would you still go?

I’d get him checked out first. He has a temp for a reason and calpol is just masking the signs not making him better.

Can you not delay by a day? I wouldn’t fancy 6 hours in a car on a warm day when already under the weather

Yes, take him and calpol and let him travel in his jammies. He will likely be fine in a day or two.

I am reluctant to take him to the GP with just a temperature as Ive taken him so many times before and they always say it’s a normal toddler virus and it will sort itself out.

I assume if we need a doctor in the next few days though, being in the U.K, ringing 111 will help me sort out some urgent care while on holiday?

I can delay by a day if needed, but it’s a special occasion holiday with family so would prefer not to.

If you need it 111 will find you an urgent care centre near where you are.

You can also go to any surgery and ask for an emergency appointment (tho prob quicker to go thru 111)

And yes take him, he’ll sleep.

I would get him checked in case he has a infection it could just be viral but might be something else.

yes of your away you can ring 111 or go to local walk in centre you can't just go to any surgery unless you register as a temp patient but that would depend if they had any appointments that day

If his temp is the only symptom and he is drinking well I would go. You can access health care anywhere in uk if needed. I wouldn't consider going to a GP with just a temp.

Take him and alternate between calpol and nurophen. I'm sure where ever you are going will have and emergency walk in.

Yes, but I'd be packing an emergency bag for the car.
A plastic bag - without holes- lined bowl for you to hold in front of him if need be.
A large towel, safety pins and string to hang over back of the seat in front of him.
Upholstery wipes, baby wipes, easy car clothes (i.e. not t-shirts that go over his head, something that you can undo and take off)
Plastic bags
Water bottle for him and large bottle as reserve + towel and flannel to wash x 2.
Hand gel.
Blanket - to wrap in/sit on at side of road if need be.
Washing detergent in case you needed any of the above.

Waterproof bed sheet/throwable bed mats for wherever you are staying.

Is he teething? Don't the back ones come through at that age?

Yes it could be teething, he often gets a temperature as he cuts a tooth.

Poor thing. I’d take him, just try to make the journey as comfortable as possible for him.

Basically pack for the worst and hope for the best!
Don't give him his favourite book in the car, just in case
