To fucking hate Sutton Bank?

Been driving for 16 years. Happy to drive anywhere at any time in any conditions. But I loathe beyond all measure Sutton Bank.

Taking dc to Flamingo Land this weekend for the day and am already anxious about it. I dont even know why. The fear of stalling halfway up maybe? The panic of the descent on the way home? Im not afraid of heights so not the actual height of the thing....just the incline.

It sounds quite exciting! I’ll have to look it up next time in that way.

Have fun at flamingo land.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/05/2018 21:09

Lol I always really enjoy Sutton bank when I’m in Yorkshire.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/05/2018 21:10

It could be worse. At least you're not on a bike

MuddlingMackem · 24/05/2018 21:10

YANBU to be nervous about it. But I suspect the level of nerves depends on how your car handles steep roads.

As a passenger though, I love it. Grin

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/05/2018 21:11

Would love to see someone do Sutton bank on a bike

MedicinalGin · 24/05/2018 21:12

Could you go a long way round and avoid it? Could you go down through places like yearsley and Terrington and then onto the a64? Bit of a shag but slightly less vertical! Good luck OP

NapQueen · 24/05/2018 21:12

Tbf the last time I did it I was in an old style T plate Micra. Now I have a focus that was made within the last decade so I suppose I should just trust my motor.

Everyone hates Sutton Bank!

Stay in second gear and ignore cars around you. I always felt sorry for the poor bus drivers taking us there on school trips!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/05/2018 21:12

It was part of the Tour de Yorkshire route the other week!

NapQueen · 24/05/2018 21:12

I cant even ride a bike anymore [sobs]

OP posts:
SneakyGremlins · 24/05/2018 21:13

What is it? Grin

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 24/05/2018 21:13

There is a lorry route around it.

NapQueen · 24/05/2018 21:13

So do I wizz up to it in 4th at a decent speed, whip down into 2nd and floor it?

OP posts:
IggyAce · 24/05/2018 21:14

I'm not a fan, I don't mind driving down it but hate driving up it. I'm sure you will be fine op.

NotARegularPenguin · 24/05/2018 21:15

It’s never bothered me at all, quite enjoyed it the few times I’ve done it.

QforCucumber · 24/05/2018 21:15

Haha this made me laugh. My 1 litre Peugeot 106 hated it, Carlton bank too!

PeaPodPopper · 24/05/2018 21:16

I just lurve Sutton Bank and actually did do it on a bike last week - motorbike that is! Grin

JuditthIscariot · 24/05/2018 21:16

I love Sutton Bank! Nice little pub almost at the bottom too

PeaPodPopper · 24/05/2018 21:16

Op, could you not avoid it by going through Kilburn instead?

NotARegularPenguin · 24/05/2018 21:18

Just don’t get behind a hgv or too close to anything, just so you can make sure you can keep your speed up.

ClashCityRocker · 24/05/2018 21:20

Ooh it doesn't half make me dizzy in a car as a passenger going up there. One of the few times I'm glad I can't actually drive!

Lunenburg · 24/05/2018 21:20

You don't have to come up it.

There is a way through Coxwold,, Wass and Ampleforth that allows you to bypass it.

ThatsNotMyUnicorn · 24/05/2018 21:22

As I'm approaching Sutton Bank I always back right off from the traffic in front so I know that I can keep my own speed up and set the pace myself (and ignore the cars behind me when I slow down to back off from the traffic in front!) in my old car I just avoided Sutton Bank by using the caravan route, which is pretty rubbish and does add travel time onto your journey!

NapQueen · 24/05/2018 21:22

Tried to find a pic for those who dont know and found this video....

I could go round it but its 2h to FL from our house and 2h home too so any diversion needs to be not too time heavy.

Atthebottomofthesea · 24/05/2018 21:23

I have never done it, I am not sure I would want to in my automatic. I don't really like doing the bank at Saltburn.
