To think prosecco, wine and gin are BAD!

In that they're aggressively marketed towards mums. Wouldn't it be nice if women were offered more help (better childcare, more flexible working etc) not to need to drink to cope with motherhood.

Bad in what way? If you think they taste bad then fine, more for me!

Tbh I haven’t particularly noticed they’re targeted at mums. I definitely drank WAY more gin before I was a Mum, as I cannot handle hangovers with a toddler

Tounge in cheek title and of course people drink for the pure pleasure of it (hic) but I see many of my mum friends who need the prosecco or the gin nearly daily to get by. Makes me sad for how tough things can be for mothers these days.

I drink to relax, unwind and enjoy myself. I drink in moderation.

Yes I would like help with childcare etc but I don't see why I can't have some fun too. I'm not just a mother I'm a person in my own right that likes to have an occasional drink.

If I had more help with the childcare I’d probably drink more , just as I did pre children :)

The biggest gin drinker I know is my 70 year old friend. She necks at least one everyday. She has no children or grandchildren or any other small people running about that 'cause' her to drink.
How many pints/glasses of wine etc do you think Dads drink OP?

Aren't booze adverts all glamourous single people eyeballing strangers in bars then running carefree through the streets of Rome before pausing to have it off against the back drop of the Trevi fountain or some such?

Not sure how much gin Gordon's would sell using an unshowered woman in a crusty cardigan being turned down for part time working so sitting alone in the dark watching repeats of tipping point on challenge.

Hmmmm if someone said your choice is a day of babysitting or a free lovely bottle of rhubarb gin i would prefer the gin. You're making me want one now.

I do think it’s weird how openly mums appear to flaunt their borderline alcoholism! Having to unwind at the end of a busy day of mumming with alcohol doesn’t seem like the healthiest way to deal with stress.

The old ‘wine-o-clock’ thing and all the gin love that seems to have become the new ‘cupcakes’ or unicorns, featuring on cushions, wall plaques and what-not, it’s certainly pervasive.

I rarely drink (maybe 3 or 4 times a year) but I do mainline tea so I guess we all have our vices.

I remember seeing the pictures by Hogarth of Gin Lane and Beer Street at college and being put off gin for years. Then I tried it, got utterly hammered on Bombay Sapphire to the point I fell asleep at my own party within an hour of guests arriving and haven’t touched it in 20 years!

Pfft - personal responsibility? If people choose to align themselves with the "boozy mummy" image, that's their lookout. I'm not sure any of those drinks are "aggressively marketed" towards mums anyway. Where is prosecco actively marketed at mums?

I think the whole gin mummy thing is more just allowing people to align with the popular blog mum types who are saying it's ok not to be perfect all the time

Luckily I had no such ideas about motherhood needing to be perfect and still don't . I drink on a weekend /holidays etc . I knocked the class a drugs on the head though .

I don’t know anyone to my knowledge who needs prosecco or gin to get by, and my friends and I are a group of real boozers. But needing alcohol to get by is an alcoholic.

I live on my own now the DC have flown, I love a good strong gin or six and obviously have no little ones to cause me any stress.

I think you're probably overestimating how much these mums are drinking. My friends and I are often joking about wine o clock....we aren't actually all downing half a bottle of wine a night. It's just banter.
