To think that this guy was wrong to complain?

Was on a train the other day, not in but near the disabled seating spaces.

There was one lady in a wheelchair already on when I joined and a man got on the train sometimes after. Both were on the train for several hours.

Since the conductor/train manager/staff members obviously knew there were people with disabilities on the train who would have trouble getting to the food bit, every now and then they would come round and ask if they wanted anything and take payment for it directly from them, which I thought was good service.

However, the man was absolutely outraged that he was CHARGED for his drinks & food. He said it's the first time he has travelled on the train (and he said he travelled a lot) where someone has charged him for his drinks and that usually they bring him everything for free. He was complaining, loudly, for ages, about how wrong and unbelievable it was.

But aibu to think he SHOULD have to pay, like everyone else does? AFAIK only first class passengers ever get anything for free because they pay so much extra for their tickets, so why should be expect to get free stuff when no one else with the same tickets does? (He had a standard ticket).

FWIW my DS is disabled and sometimes has to travel in a wheelchair, I don't expect special treatment for either of us, just the same as everyone else gets. I appriciate it must be very difficult being a full time wheelchair user on public transport, I have experienced some of it myself, but his disability didn't affect his ability to pay for drinks!

Having a wheel chair is no guarantee to manners ime.
My late aunt expected the red carpet rolled out for her wheelchair..
Entitled when able bodied and no better with wheels.

What an entitled idiot. I agree with the OP that the train staff were being thoughtful and offering good service.

Maybe he normally travels first class?

YANBU. I would imagine that he hadn't been charged in the past simply because he made such a huge fuss.

No, he definately knew about the differences between first class and standard because he was discussing it with the wheelchair lady! She had happily paid for her stuff before he got on and seemed quite uncomfortable with his tirade.
