To be pissed off with vanity sizing

SayImADreamer · 20/05/2018 15:54

Im a size 10 and a size 8 in looser floatier designs.

Back in the uk so went to primark. Picked up some tops, holding them up thought they looked a bit big sp got them all in size 8. Got 6 different tops.

Get back home, try them on, and theyre all too big.

There's no way im a size 6, trust me. Its fucking annoying. Just label things with the correct size FFS.

Goes hand in hand with that old trope: "Marilyn Monroe was a size 12!" Yeah. A size 12 in the 50s, which would probably be like a size 8 today based on what im seeing.

Sorry just annoyed because primark is hardly hyper structured wear, i should be able to just go in and grab some vest tops and trust the sizing. Now i have to take them back

/end rant

YABU for not trying them on in the changing room before buying them. It's well known that all shop sizes vary.

Amanduh · 20/05/2018 15:58

I don’t think it’s just that though. I bought a dress h&m last week and it’s teeny tiny. I’m a 10-12 but would need about an 18 in that!!
Then bought a tshirt in next that was also tiny.
However just bought a new dress from asos and it’s massive. I’ll probably be a 6 in it.
I think it’s cheap manufacturing that’s the problem

NukaColaGirl · 20/05/2018 15:59

I’m a size 12 yet in Primark even a 16 in jeans won’t go over my thighs. So the opposite issue for me.

FelicitationsFacilitations · 20/05/2018 16:00

Weird. I have the opposite prob with primark - size 12/14 everywhere else, need 16+ with them!! Shock

ILikeMyChickenFried · 20/05/2018 16:02

I think Primark is just rubbish at sizing I don't think they do it on purpose. That's why I don't shop there

kyrenialady · 20/05/2018 16:04

Primark sizes are tiny, I can't buy anything from there anymore.

reallybadidea · 20/05/2018 16:05

Primark sizing is just inconsistent.

I bought two vests there the other day - I had to get one in an 8 and one in a 10 to get the same fit.

NailsNeedDoing · 20/05/2018 16:07

I just had exactly the same at primark. I'm a size 10, and while most things I bought were also a 10, I also bought stuff in an 8, and one pair of trousers in a size 12 because my arse looked huge in the 10

annandale · 20/05/2018 16:08

My experience is that primark sizes are huge, it's the only place I can buy a 16! I wonder if they size to apple shapes? I'm a huge apple with a vast egglike belly but no hips at all, a flat saggy bottom and weirdly skinny legs. Maybe I am Primark's muse.

grasspigeons · 20/05/2018 16:11

well I picked up two pairs of trousers in M&S for work. Both size 14 and of the same design, just one is in grey and one in navy. They are ridiculously different.

One is slightly baggy on my bum/thighs and really big at the waste. And one is pretty much perfect. Obviously I tried on pair on, it fitted so just picked up the other colour thinking surely they'll fit too.

I think they just sew size labels on at random.

BalloonSlayer · 20/05/2018 16:17

I had that in M&S, grasspigeons. I moaned about it when I took back the one that didn't fit. The lady said "you should have tried it on."

Yeah well I tried on one pair and liked it so much I thought I'd get another colour as well. Surely it's not unreasonable to assume that everything in the same style/design is the same size?

And for years and years M&S didn't have changing rooms, their USP was that you couldn't try anything on but you could take it back!

LooseyInTheSky · 20/05/2018 16:18

Everything is crap and unreliable with cheap, fast fashion.

FASH84 · 20/05/2018 16:20

Primark is madness, I have t-shirts in 8, 10 and 12 all same style all the same fit, three different labels. I try on everything in there

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 20/05/2018 16:23

Funny as I find Primark are on the small side.

Deathraystare · 20/05/2018 16:23

(Joking) I am an 18 and wish there was more vanity sizing! I tell you if I ended up wearing a 14 or 12 - the label would be outside - on show!!!

WhiteCoyote · 20/05/2018 16:26

Had this problem in Next. Tried a pair of jeans on size 12, perfect fit but too long. Got exactly the same type except from the petite section - same label, name, type, colour - literally only just got the 12 past my knees. Had to go to a size 16 and they were very snug. It makes no sense.

ComtesseDeSpair · 20/05/2018 16:26

I'm sure many people would think this is a nice problem to have, but I agree it is annoying. Also agree with people who've said it's not just vanity sizing but that cheaper clothing is just manufactured badly - I know full well that I am neither a size 2 nor a size 12, but have recently had to buy dresses in both sizes from different shops despite them being similar styles. I'm no longer sure what measurements sizes actually correspond to because it certainly doesn't seem to be waist circumference or chest size etc.

OrangesAndLemons10 · 20/05/2018 16:27

Bought something in jack wills recently, I was warned so many times by my friends that their sizing is tiny, so I was fully prepared to go up a few sizes....I'm normally a size 8/10 and I was a size 6 in some of their clothes. I'm in no way a size 6! No way at all!

OddBoots · 20/05/2018 16:30

I have taken to bringing a tape measure with me these days, no way am I setting foot in a changing room but the size number on the label seems meaningless.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/05/2018 16:30

I’m surprised ppl say primark is on small size. I find them very generous.

Undercoverbanana · 20/05/2018 16:31

Next are the worst. There is no way in the universe that I am a size 6. It’s actually insulting. I think H&M are pretty consistent.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 20/05/2018 16:31

yes, YABU not to try the clothes on.

I think there's no consistency in Primark whatsoever, but the other shops are not better. I have clothes from size 8 to 16! I am normally a "medium" height, but some items fit better from the tall section, sometimes a size lower than mine.
If you buy a pack of 2 or 3, you can't even guarantee they will have the same sizes inside, it's ridiculous.

I don't buy cheap jeans anymore, I go to a more expensive store and try pretty much the entire stock if I need. It's not worth my time to even bother with different stores, I'll spend the weekend there.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/05/2018 16:32

mad isn't it - I am 12-14 - in Next 12's are big - size 14 shorts in Primark wont go over my arse

drives me mad

upsideup · 20/05/2018 16:34

YANBU OP
I have always been a size 6/8 and if anything over the past few years I have gained a little weight but nothing in highstreet shops fits me anymore. A dress in a size 6 from a brand I always used to buy from which fitted me perfectly not fit now fits falls of me.
A size 8 today used to be a size 12, thats an extra 4 inches added to the waist.

Ellapaella · 20/05/2018 16:34

Primark sizes are small IMO! I nearly always have to size up.
