To not pay the whole amount?

NC as this is very outing if anyone I know reads this!

I am having my bathroom redone. The plumber was booked for Monday to Friday and he had arranged his own tiler to come on the Friday so it would all be finished then.
Tiler couldn't make it as the job he was on was looking like it would overrun. He told the plumber this on Monday which is fine, plenty of notice. I then arranged for someone I know to come and do the tiling on Thursday evening and to finish it on Friday. He did half the job on Thursday but then, at the last minute, couldn't come back on Friday.

Plumber hasn't been able to finish the job - I still have no shower and it looks a mess. I got a mate round to finish the tiling but the original tiler has bodged up a tile (it's not straight) and the ones above it won't go on properly. I have someone else coming to fix it now thankfully but the bodged tile needs removing.

The original tiler has now asked for £80. He I was at my house for 2.5 hours. He has made the job last an extra 10 days as my plumber is away next week and bodged up the wall.

So AIBU to not want to pay him £80? Happy to pay something but not that!

If I've read your OP right the original tiler never turned up so I wouldn't be paying the cheeky sod anything when he did nothing.

Sorry, probably not clear! The original tiler came, did half a job, left me in the lurch and has bodged up a tile so it's not straight and will need to be redone.

Wouldn't pay him a penny. He didn't complete the job and screwed it up.

I wouldn't pay .. he might take you to small claims court mind you ,but for £80 he probably won't

I have pictures and the text messages where he has said he will settle for £50 (this is before I knew it was messed up) then when I found out it needed replacing I told him and gave him the chance to fix it. He just ignored me.

He lives close to me and we were friendly before this!

One bodged tile isn't a biggie - would probably pop off and be reusable if done with care. I would pay him the 50 quid - the fact that the initial tiler couldn't come and he stepped in isn't his fault - he didn't really cause the delays original tiler did. He still did the rest of the tiles OK and spent 2.5hrs there

i know it is a bit different but makes me think of that old saying never mix business with pleasure.

It's not just one bodged tile. There's no finish on the edge of it, they don't all lie flat and it's delayed the job from being finished by an extra 10 days.

When I say friendly I don't mean drinking buddies, I mean exchange pleasantries when and say hi as they live next to a friends house.

Original tiler let plumber know he couldn't come on Monday. My plumber could have found another tiler but I knew this person and said I would see if they could do it. They said they could. They did half a job then let me down last minute (excuse was feeble and when I went out I saw him just stood around messing with his car).

No way, I wouldn't pay him anything. Didn't finish the job and what he managed to do wasn't right and has cost you. Not a chance.

So your plumber sub contracted the tiler? Then HE pays the tiler and when its finished to your satisfaction, you pay the plumber.

Deduct if you will the penalty for running over if that was in your contract.

So the tiler was booked by the plumber and said he couldn’t do it? You persuaded this tiler to come anyway and he bodged it? Wasn’t he being paid by the plumber? Or were you always going to pay him direct?

The plumber was in the middle of something so I said I would try a person I knew. He then said he could do it so I was then responsible for paying the new tiler, not the plumber.

I wouldn’t pay the full amount, or even £50 as he didn’t finish the job and did an awful job with the tiles he did lay. At most I’d give 50%, £40 as you’re going to have to pay someone else to sort his mess out

Did the first tiler who did half a job say he wouldn't come back to finish the job? When a tradesman doesn't do a job properly you are supposed to give them an opportunity to put the job right. You seem to have jumped quickly from one tiler to another (possibly three tilers involved in this job).

I also don't understand how he has delayed the job but if you are confident he has and there really was a problem with his work (not just tiler2 saying there is a problem), then you could dock some money. Because of the relatively small sums involved that should be the end of the matter but you could also consider paying up to avoid any awkwardness on your doorstep.

I think that technically though, if he is willing to come back to put the problems right he isn't in breach of contract, and arguably by giving the half-finished job to someone else, you could be in breach. I'm not a lawyer though.

Right so not the original planned tiler but the one you organised.

I would offer him £30 or £40 for the work he did while he was there. It's not relevant that your plumber is away and it's delayed by 10 days. However if he has ignored your message, I would let him chase you for it, rather than ring him up and offer

Charles - I gave him the chance to put it right and he hasn't accepted it. I can't just wait around wondering if he will accept it or not as I do need the facility to wash!

He has delayed this because if he would have completed it within the agreed time frame my bathroom would have been finished.

And there is a problem with his work as my friend (who did the tiling yesterday) had to take off the ones he put on above the wonky one as they wouldn't line up and that tile will either need replacing or grinding down.

OP's plumber couldn't make it, op arranged for someone she knew to do it. He came, did half a job (a bodged one) & couldn't finish.

Op then got a friend to come finish & fix the last tilers work.

Op, don't pay unless he comes to fix it and finishes the job!

I wouldn't pay him a single penny, and I'd tell him to count himself lucky that you haven't sent him a bill for getting someone else to fix the mess he made!
