To ask when I should be worried about a fever?

Sorry, not really AIBU but posting for traffic because no response in health.

I'm at home on my own today with a D&V bug. DH at a wedding.

My fever is now 39.36c - when do I need to worry about it? I almost never get ill so I don't know if I am just being precious! I'm just resting and hydrating at the moment.

Thank you!

Have you taken paracetamol/ibuprofen?

GalwayWayfarer · 19/05/2018 18:31

I took some paracetamol this morning and again about 15 mins ago - so maybe hasn't had time to work yet?

There's no upper limit on a fever for healthy adults, but you need to be aware of the signs of sepsis and if you have any of those in conjunction with your fever, get yourself to A&E.

Certain health problems might indicate different action - if you have any health problems you could google that in conjunction with fever to see if that is a particular concern. Also if you take any regular medication.

Do you have any aches or pains in your body? As a fever can be a sign of an infection which may need antibiotics, in which case you'd want to try to get to OOH rather than wait until Monday.

IME if you're poorly enough for it to be an emergency you wouldn't normally be lucid enough to be posting so clearly on MN - I know this isn't always the case, but for something like you're talking about. I'm not a doctor though!

When I last had a high fever I ended up getting the shakes which was alarming enough for me to try and call my doctor although I couldn't control my hands enough to work the touchscreen of my phone. DH ended up taking me to hospital then and I was taken in with a bad UTI which needed IV antibiotics. I had not put the UTI symptoms, back pain and temperature all together - I just thought it was a bad cold.

I would give the paracetamol some more time to try and lower your temperature.

With paracetamol for virus or bug its best to take every 4-5 hours to ease symptoms
As your are resting and able to re-hydrate without D&V (I hope) you should feel a litter better.
I can take a couple of days to fully recover.
Hope you feel better soon
