6yr old hurt his arm

I picked my 6yr old up from school today and he was holding his arm by his side. He told me he and another child had fallen over while playing and the other child had fell on his arm. School just sent home a bump letter so I rang them to ask if he had used his arm all afternoon to be told he had done his work. He has hurt his right arm and he is left handed so this doesn't help at all. We decided to take him to a&e as his hand was very swollen and mottled. A doctor examined him and said it was just bruising. He's been joke for approx 2 hours. I've given him calpol and he's still not using his arm and wincing and crying every now and again. Should I take him somewhere to get a second opinion? I don't want to waste a&es time but I'm concerned he's not using it. He's not a mardy child. And normally bounces right back after hurting himself.

Did they not X-ray it? If not, I’d be inclined to wait until tomorrow, see how he fares overnight and if he starts using it in the morning, if not I’d go right back. Do you have a minor injuries unit, rather than a&e?

My dd broke her arm when she was only 2, she wasn’t in pain just wasn’t using it to pick anything up, ended up being a green stock fracture and she needed a cast for 3 weeks. I felt like the worst mum ever because I honestly felt I was wasting hospital time.

Do you have a minor injuries clinic near you? They are normally much quicker than A&E and can treat sprains, x-ray for fractures etc.

Nobody can tell you whether or not to take him as we can't see the injury however if you are seriously concerned I would be inclined to trust your instincts.

We do have a minor injuries about 25 mins away. The doctor did say if it's no better in a couple of days to take him back. They didn't X-ray it. When my dad was 11 she broke her wrist and the doctor even said I'm sure it's not broken but we will X-ray it anyway and it turned out to be.

Hi @sijjy, how is your ds today?

Ggirl27 · 18/05/2018 17:27

I think you should take him and get it xrayed, my daughter broke her wrist and it took them two weeks and two X-rays to spot it. If he’s holding his arm funny and not using it something is definitely wrong. You can’t always see a fracture because of swelling. Hope he’s ok x

Hi Jammie. I took him
Back today as he had been up in the night crying. And he said the medicine wasn't making it stop. They did a X-ray and can't see anything on the bones. But his fat plate isn't where it's supposed to be so could indicate a fracture in his elbow that hasn't been seen on X-ray. He has a sling and a appointment at the fracture clinic for Monday morning so will see what they say. Thank you for asking how he is.

Oh bless him, hopefully you get more answers on Monday. Breaks are usually more painful at night, and with the xray, it does sound like he has done something.
Hope he’s getting spoiled this weekend Flowers

Oh poor wee soul 😞 Hope he's on the mend soon or that if it is a fracture you get it diagnosed soon x

Thank you everyone.

How did you get on at the fracture clinic yesterday?

sijjy · 27/05/2018 17:28

Hi boptothetop. Sorry for the late reply. The consultant asked him to do some movements and he could move it fine. So no further treatment. He said he could use the sling for another week if it helped. But by Monday my 6 yr old was well sick of it and not being able to use his arm properly so took it straight it off. I was relieved he was back to normal and nothing broken.
