Aibu to not have realised that Prince Harry’s real name is Henry?
And Meghan’s real name is Rachel?
I’m mid 30s and never knew that Harry was a nickname.
Mind blown.

Gosh yes that’s quite unusual not to know that.

Alienspaceship · 17/05/2018 18:56

I didn’t realise she was called Rachel.

amillionpawpatrolslater · 17/05/2018 18:56

No one ever told me Confused
They should teach this in schools!

Grin
ChasedByBees · 17/05/2018 18:59

I don’t think it’s that unusual to not know that (I’m confusing myself with the amount of negatives but I’m trying to agree with you OP)

brodiee · 17/05/2018 19:01

Didn't realise she's called rachel!

Harry is a diminutive of Henry

amillionpawpatrolslater · 17/05/2018 19:02

Thanks for the support!
I’m taking it all the other “Royals” are known by their correct names?
I won’t find out that Will is actually called David?!

OP posts:
Chillyegg · 17/05/2018 19:03

I literally never new that?! I worked with a guy called James everyone called him James . Actually his real name was Kevin ...which blew my mind. His middle name was James and everyone just called him that.

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 17/05/2018 19:04

But Harry IS the correct name for Henry, Harry is short for Henry like Will is short for William. Not all Harry’s are Henry’s but it is a standard diminutive.

amillionpawpatrolslater · 17/05/2018 19:05

Yes @Chillyegg , I’m glad I’m not the only one that didn’t know this!

OP posts:
lanbury · 17/05/2018 19:06

I knew that, but only because I remember him being born Grin I know a few people who also use their middle name instead of their first name for a bizarre reason.

amillionpawpatrolslater · 17/05/2018 19:07

Isn’t a nickname usually shorter?
Like “Lizzie” for “Elizabeth” and “Andy” for “Andrew”.
Harry has exactly the same amount of letters and syllables as Henry! Never knew it was a diminutive of Henry.

OP posts:
TheSecondOfHerName · 17/05/2018 19:07

I met someone once who had sons called Harry and Henry. I didn't mention that one was a nickname for the other.

Bluelady · 17/05/2018 19:09

I use my middle name, have never been called anything else.

lanbury · 17/05/2018 19:10

Think there's loads of abbreviations in names though...
Henry =Harry
William =Bill Grin
Elizabeth = Liz or Betty
Charles = Charlie
Camilla = Milly
Catherine = Kate

Clearly most of the time the Royals chose not to abbreviate (or not in public anyway!)

FASH84 · 17/05/2018 19:11

It's like when you call someone uncle Jack all your life then find out he's called John and your gran says yes Jack is a nickname for people called John?!?

William was known as Wills as a child

The Queen was famously Lilibet as a child.

Nothing to see here... Move along.

Peggy is short for Margaret.

LeggyLinda · 17/05/2018 19:15

Obviously as a relative oldie I remember “Harry” s christening.
But Meghan being Rachel is news to me.

I’ve always known Harry was Henry but Meghan being Rachel is news to me too.

TookyClothespin · 17/05/2018 19:24

I once knew someone who had twins called William and Henry. When first told I said "oh like the princes!" She gave me a Hmm and said "no, Henry not Harry". I did point out Harry's name was Henry and she didn't believe me!
You are not unusual to not know that!

8misskitty8 · 17/05/2018 19:25

My nana has always used her middle name instead of her first name. She’s done it for over 80years ! But when she was is in hospital her ‘real’ first name is written up with the name she uses In brackets, as all her medical notes etc. Have her first name on them.

Me and my cousin actually have the same name, hers it the Gaelic version of mine.
