To feel a bit judged by his tone?

I live in quite a nice area in a big rented house (context!) - houseshare so couldn’t afford it myself. I’m currently off from work ill so ordered an ad hoc grocery delivery and when I picked it up, was clearly still in pjs, greasy hair at mid-morning - was clear I’m not at work etc, whatever.

The driver sort of sized me up and down and then the first thing he said was “are these council houses?” I have no idea what he meant by that but can only imagine it be based on the fact I’m clearly not at work atm? The houses themselves are London terraced houses in a posh suburb so don’t look like it.

I don’t get why people think that’s an appropriate conversation starter either?!

Very rude!!

Wow I’d probably complain to his work about that. If it wasn’t in context then he must have meant it in a judgy, insulting way. X

I handled it so badly - sort of stammered out that I rent privately. Urgh. As if it’s any of his sodding business

English wasn’t his first language and he wasn’t asking in a rude manner per se, in fairness. I don’t want to complain as I don’t want to stir. But it really embarrassed me! I look a state and I felt really judged by his implication that I must therefore not have a job etc

And anyway even if they were, very rude of him to ask

What a cheeky Bollix he was! Don’t waste another moment on his twunttery. Enjoy a relaxing day off - you earned it!

Perhaps he was just genuinely curious? I think you're projecting somewhat.

SluttyButty · 15/05/2018 11:55

😳 That's so rude! I'm fairly sure that most people in social housing, private rent and bought houses look far smarter than I do at 11am. I'm usually always in my dressing gown, looking a state even at midday. I have to wait until I've unstiffened and feel reasonably ok before I get dressed.

No one needs judgemental people like that in their lives even if they're just delivering your groceries...

Maybe he or one of his friends/relatives is in line for a Council house and he was interested in what sort of properties they might be? If he didn't say it in a rude manner I doubt whether he was judging.

On the other hand, I'm bemused at your assumption that if it were a Council property, that meant the implication was that you didn't have a job.
