Do sex robots scare you?

Has anyone else seen any documentaries about the growing industry of Sex dolls? I've watched a couple and just felt kind of pitiful to the men who buy them - like it's just a weird sex fetish.

Last night I saw something about sex robots on Twitter and it sent a shudder down my spine. I just thought about how awful they really were. They're teaching men to treat women as objects. Am I being unreasonable? Are they a harmless outlets for men who can't get real girlfriends or are they a sign of a more misogonistic culture getting out of hand? If this is normalised....

I saw an episode of Humans where sex robots were being used/abused horribly.

NormskiNamechange · 14/05/2018 20:24

I don’t know the answer to your questions but I too find them a little bit odd to say the least.

I personally wouldn’t want a male sex doll.

Horsedogbird · 14/05/2018 20:24

No YANBU. Awful things. These and robots to chat to the elderly, awful

HollowTalk · 14/05/2018 20:24

Sorry, posted too soon. It stands to reason that if women are dehumanised during sex, it bodes very ill for relationships of all kinds.

DJLippy · 14/05/2018 20:26

Yes this is what I worry. Do they dehumanise women?

Yes they do ! There’s no two ways about it

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/05/2018 20:30

Repulse me more than scare me tbh.

SardineReturns · 14/05/2018 20:33

They won't take away demand for real flesh, they will increase the distance between the men who want to buy women and the women they buy, they will see them as even less human, and want even more xtreme things than they do at the moment.

They will be used as practice before moving on to people.

I am glad that they have banned child sex dolls (and presumably will ban child sex robots) in the UK (I think that has happened, one man got done for it anyway). The idea that they might help reduce child rape is not based in reality sadly.

DJLippy · 14/05/2018 20:35

They should ban all sex dolls. Do only children need protection? What about women?

Elementtree · 14/05/2018 20:35

They're teaching men to treat women as objects.

Ha. I think that ship has sailed.

GummyGoddess · 14/05/2018 20:42

No, they're very useful. If any potential partner has one or has used one then you can easily knock them off of the list of people you want to date.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/05/2018 20:48

They are terrifying. I remember reading about sex robots at an exhibition not so long ago. I think I read that the company didn't have any 'takers' for actual purchases so they gave men free reign and the damage done to the robots was horrifying.

HemanOrSheRa · 14/05/2018 20:49

Ah cross post Smile Sad.

Metoodear · 14/05/2018 20:49

Keeps the weirdos away from women

SmileEachDay · 14/05/2018 20:50

Herman - yup. The article makes the point that sex robots eroticise non consent.

Rape culture?

DJLippy · 14/05/2018 20:51

re @Smile "They treated the doll like barbarians."

I had a really bleak/sci-fi-distopian thought:

Hypothetically, if in the future such robots became so lifelike that they could be mistaken for real women, they would still be really expensive wouldn't they?
But there may well be a demand for them based on the "novelty" of using a sexbot/hurting them without guilt.

So a sex-bot "brothel" would probably find it more economical to staff themselves with real women anyway. I suppose it would be viewed as fraud if they were found out.

Sorry, I know that's horrible and incredibly dark but I think its more plausable than the set up in humans and Westworld etc. Unless we place more value on a human life in the future than we do now...

DJLippy · 14/05/2018 20:55

Don'y set off my Sci-fi brain! She knows no bounds.

True.

Humans are cheap, you can make new ones with little trouble, we are very efficient in terms of energy consumption, highly adaptable, self repairing to a point etc etc

people will always be cheaper than robots unless something very extreme happens.

DJLippy · 15/05/2018 17:29

You won't be able to fake sex robots for ages yet. Nobody ever asks - do they smell human? Scent is about 70% of human attraction, otherwise your just humping an object...
