To want to whinge sometimes?

Sorry in advance for this pathetic moan. I know there is more important things to worry about. I am aware I am being selfish. thanks mum

So DH and DSS's are away to Germany this weekend and I'm home alone with no one to talk to.

I came home yesterday to discover our roof was leaking. I managed to get a roofer out today and we need £4500 of work done. They are working on it now.

I called our insurance who says as we didn't get prior approval and multiple quotes they might not pay. We do have saving but this will essentially wipe them out. We needed a new boiler at Christmas.

I called my mum to essentially moan to her about it and was told I had nothing to moan about, what about Syria, Myanmar etc.

I am aware I am fortunate to have our own home, jobs, food and money but sometimes you just need to get it out and talk to someone. Rather than have a misfortune competition.

I know it's a pain in the arse but this is the reality of home ownership. Remind yourself that if you hadn't had the savings to get this sorted out right away, the damage could have been a lot more expensive.

That's pretty unhelpful of your mum! Spiteful is right but just because there are terrible things going on in the world doesn't mean we can't feel fed up with things. It doesn't mean we don't care or sympathise. Top trumps about who's got the most misery in life isn't realistic.

Birdsgottafly · 12/05/2018 16:23

It's always tough having to spend money, that you didn't have to.

How bad was the roof damage, could it have been the case that more damage would have been done to your property/possessions had it not been started straight away?

Has the Roofer got a few mates who could write out quotes?

It doesn't matter how trivial something is, in the whole scheme of things, we do all need a moan from time to time.

MaisyPops · 12/05/2018 16:26

Everyone needs a moan about some things and tough times.

Some people moan more than others (like one of my colleagues, any situation at work ends up back to why everything is terrible) and I've no time for that, but you were totally justified to have a moan about your roof.

It's a bit like when someone doesn't finish their food someone saying "what about all the starving children in Africa?" It doesn't actually help anyone, the starving children won't be affected by you finishing the food or not. It's just designed to layer on the guilt!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 12/05/2018 16:38

YANBU. Sometimes a whinge is required, definitely.

redexpat · 12/05/2018 17:02

That does sound rubbish. True it's not Syria but annoying nevertheless. Winge away.

It is healthy to have a good moan every once in a while. My husband and I use each other as a sounding board and it's great therapy. The important thing is that we don't take our frustrations out on each other, rather just "to" each other. We will have an epic rant about whatever is making us crazy, and the listener will simply listen, nod, and offer support. We usually end up laughing when we're done because we know how unhinged we (temporarily) seem to be.

So definitely have a good rant. Hopefully you'll feel better to get it out.
