I check my grammar and often fail. But I try to create a good impression.

I don't use text speak usually. I usually do in texts all day long.

I don't write as I speak. I try to be fairly grammar correct.

For clarity, I'm from Liverpool, I'm a "babe, are you messing", etc etc all day long.
I'm 38. I have an amazing job.
I've worked hard to get where I am.
I have hair extensions all day in the office and eyelashes if I can be arsed.
I was a single parent for a long time (to me)

But on here I make sure I try to use correct grammar, etc etc cause I can't be arsed being flamed. Or labelled as I feel a bit like it's all "middle class" and most people don't bother with all that.

Anyone else do this or just me being being a dick??

I check my grammar and am mortified if I get it wrong; I wouldn’t say that’s a middle class mumsnet thing though. I just think it’s important. I never use text speak either.
There is a special law (similar to sod’s law) that whenever a person attempts to be all high and mighty about grammar, they make a whopping great mistake in their post. I’ve had quite a lot of wine so this is probably riddled with them. But I bloody love grammar and good spelling too.

Smeddum · 11/05/2018 22:30

If I wrote like I spoke it would read like Trainspotting (without the drugs obviously!) Grin

SabineUndine · 11/05/2018 22:31

Um. You’re not being a dick, no. Most people don’t write the way they would speak since when you write you have more time to think about the best way to put something. On top of that, what you write has to cover the information you put in facial expressions and gestures when you speak.

PositivelyPERF · 11/05/2018 22:33

If I wrote as I spoke, the only thing you’d understand would be the swear words, with my accent. 😆

ScreamingValenta · 11/05/2018 22:33

You're not a dick, OP. I don't use text speak even in text messages, but we're all different. I avoid pointing out spelling and grammatical errors in people's posts and certainly would never flame someone for a mistake. It's normal to adjust your writing style to suit your audience or to convey a message in the most appropriate way.

STOPSHOUTINGPLS · 11/05/2018 22:35

U is being unreasonable innit?

Ancientmummyofwooooos · 11/05/2018 22:40

Id be unreadable, broad yorkshire and calling everybody pet, and i dont mean a leeds or halifax twang- i mean north yorkshire moors up in t'ills- actively try to curb it around the DC's

AmberNectarine · 11/05/2018 22:44

I never use text-speak, because I can't abide it, but i certainly don't use the same language on MN as IRL, any more than I do at work.

I use 'fuck' as punctuation. It wouldn't read well.

That being said, I don't affect a style of writing, I just don't pepper it with obscenity.

I do like to read a well constructed paragraph, but as long as your SPAG is broadly there, I don't think you need to worry. The ones I click away from are universally a wall of text without any punctuation or capitalisation.

Pollaidh · 11/05/2018 22:46

I'm so tempted to start a thread where everyone writes as they speak.

MeanTangerine · 11/05/2018 22:46

A divvent naa wot yeeronnaboot pet.

sadandtired1 · 11/05/2018 22:49

I used to give a shit about spelling and grammar on forums like this and Facebook and so on then I grew up and stopped being (so much of) a dick

Life is too short to go back and correct capital letters and full stops

As long as you're understood who gives a fuck

You get me as my autocorrect dictates ya do

MetalMidget · 11/05/2018 22:50

I try to be pretty meticulous about my grammar and spelling. I don't always succeed though...

In real life, I've got a bit of a Black Country accent (leading the less educated to assume I'm from Birmingham). Not fully "`OW AM YA, BAB?" though.

princesspeppax · 11/05/2018 22:50

YANBU I also dont type how i speak, lol Grin

GlitterGlassEye · 11/05/2018 22:51

Yes. I know where you’re coming from. I get quite pedantic BUT if I spoke in my accent I’d say “Aye, a get were yur comin fae”. My WhatsApp group message responses are in my Glaswegian accent. Here? No.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 11/05/2018 22:52

Is right then ladies Grin

MsVestibule · 11/05/2018 22:59

allthegoodnames FWIW, I appreciate the effort you put in Grin. But it's not posh typing, it's just writing so people can easily understand you! Isn't that the idea when writing on a public forum?

But I even hate text speak on texts (I have occasionally used semi-colons in them) so maybe I'm not the best person to ask.

Notsooriginalwerther · 11/05/2018 23:03

Yanbu. I’m from down south, my mum had elocution lessons and therefore I suppose I’ve had second hand lessons from her so in rl I speak quite well, however when I’m typing I do it so fast and with blind faith I believe my autocorrect has understood me, which the majority of the time it has not and everything I’ve written looks like nonsense. For Duck sake. Wink

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 11/05/2018 23:05

My grammar is usually ok

But ive switched off the automatic punctuation on my ipad cos it was pissing me off...and i cant be bothered to add the punctuation myself

Spelling can be very hit and miss so i do tend to check that

Pollaidh · 11/05/2018 23:06

It's time a hit ma scratcher. Feelin' a wee bit bloa'ed after ma single fish the nicht.

I speak RP really, but lived in Sco'land long enough tae pick up a rather muddled accent.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 11/05/2018 23:08

I honestly think that spelling and grammar on forums is the least important thing in the world. My phone autocorrects half of what I say incorrectly and who has the time to give a shit?! I don’t like txt spk and the dh/ds/deverything is annoying (I’ve seen people use dcat and ddog on here... what’s that all about?), but other than that, it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like mumsnet is a professional setting.

boilemmashemstickeminastew · 11/05/2018 23:12

I love spelling and grammar! Grin

Anyway some people's grammar is just worser then others, I wouldn't worry about it Wink
