To be shocked that this still exists?

Mil called this morning. Asked if I would like a job as a receptionist where she works. Just to clarify I have no experience in this. Which i told her.
Her answer was, oh you will definitely get it, they only employ good looking people Hmm
Just to clarify, this is not a boasting thread, I don't think I'm good looking. But I was massively pissed off that she thought I would happy about getting a job simply on the way I looked. I can't believe there are still employers out there like this Shock

Was it a stealth boast by MIL? Grin

myfriendbob · 11/05/2018 22:02

She didn't say you would get the job only for looks. You would actually have to be competent as well as attractive to get the job.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 11/05/2018 22:03

Put a positive spin on it - your MIL thinks you're beautiful 😁.

helacells · 11/05/2018 22:04

Absolutely it exists! My daughters friend just got a job in a bar where the manager has an Asian fetish so ALL the bar maids are either Chinese or a mix. Her friend is half black half Chinese.

AmazingPostVoices · 11/05/2018 22:06

Trendy Bars, high end boutiques, trendy teenage clothes shops. Make up counters. Full to the brim of beautiful people.

Mamabear1475 · 11/05/2018 22:09

I understand you would at least have to be competent. But I have zero experience in anything like this. No phone experience, no customer facing experience. Nothing. I tried to explain this about 4 times but she was insistent I would still get it anyway. Because "they want nice looking people at the front desk, not ugly ones"

I get why you're annoyed, but hell I'd be happy nonetheless. Man I wish I had a mil... bet she would think im a twunt Grin

WorraLiberty · 11/05/2018 22:19

If they're willing to employ receptionists with no experience, then it'll be a 'learn on the job' type thing anyway, so why not go for it?

Part of my job involves reception work and I had zero experience in that department before I started too.

Allergictoironing · 11/05/2018 22:34

Studies a few years ago showed that all other things being equal, an attractive woman would be more likely to get a job than a plain or dumpy one. Apparently, this was slightly MORE prevalent in female hiring managers! Shock

Witchend · 11/05/2018 22:38

I would assume she's joking. Think of it this way-even if it was true how's she stopping all the other good looking people applying. Smile

FunkyHeroCat · 11/05/2018 22:39

It totally exists - my youngest sister (who could have been a model) got a job in a certain trendy central London tea establishment that was known for only hiring attractive people.

Me - not so attractive, never had much luck with those kind of jobs (went to several interviews for them when I was young - they took one look and I knew I wouldn't get them) had to go and qualify to be a scientist instead.

To think looks don't make a big difference in customer facing jobs is being naive.

FunkyHeroCat · 11/05/2018 22:41

(I prefer being a scientist btw)

Thosewhomatterdontm1nd · 11/05/2018 22:42

I'm not sure experience is always necessary for a receptionist role.

myfriendbob · 11/05/2018 22:43

So why are you saying "I can't believe there are employers like this" when you dont know what the employer thinks about it at all? Just what your MIL thinks/

AnnieAnoniMouser · 11/05/2018 22:43

Be as shocked as you like. If you need a job, take it & see how it goes. Life is unfair, if it’s in your favour for once, don’t knock it.

OlennasWimple · 11/05/2018 22:45

Hmmm, trying to remember the last time I saw a make up counter assistant, promotions person, trendy bar tender, or flight attendant who wasn't at least slightly better than averagely good looking... (It stinks, though, obviously)

Mamabear1475 · 11/05/2018 22:47

I don't need the job. I'm on maternity leave. She just asked because it is a mornings only job and would be ideal

I used to work for a car parts delivery company, and they told me straight at the interview that the best looking girl who applied got the job. If there was a choice of half a dozen parts companies to use with similar prices, which one would the garages who use them choose?
