About giving baby solids when unwell

My 8 month old is full of a cold and can't barely breathe through his nose because of all the snot. He has been like this for 5 days. Doctor has confirmed it's nothing other than a cold and it could take a couple of weeks to be completely clear.

Every single time I have tried to give him a solid meal he gags when trying to swallow then throws up the food along with any milk he has had beforehand. Enough to cover the floor and high chair tray.

I've decided to leave proper meals until he's a little better and just give him plenty of milk.

He has a bit of a nibble on apple slices and rice cakes during meal times as that is easier on his gag reflex but I don't think it's worth the stress of cleaning up huge amounts of sick and having him upset every time the family all around the table to eat.

My friend thinks he will 'forget' how to eat and get out of the habit of eating foodHmm I think she's silly, he's still having bits of finger food but actual meals seem to be a bit much when he's got a lot of snot coming out orifice!

My little girl has been exactly the same, yesterday I was about to give her lunch and she started coughing a lot, and had phlegm stuck in her throat

I took her out of her high chair to rub her back and she projectile vomited everywhere! We were both covered, (first time she has ever being sick) after that I was scared to feed her but I knew she would be hungry.

I just stuck to smooth un-milky purées and plenty of water, her nose is running like a tap but everything seems to be off her chest.

Nice steamy baths on a night time, maybe try some toast or smooth purée and fruity custards, try and stay off the lumps as much

Hope he gets well soon! Smile

I've been through this a couple of times with my little girl, she went back to eating with no issues once she was better.

Before my DS was fully weaned, I always kept him on milk when unwell. He's always gone back to solids once better.

I used to put mine in the bathroom in a bouncy chair so the steam could help clear their little noses before attempting breakfast/milk which helped reduce the risk of vomiting.

If baby is willing to try solids that's fine, try melty type foods and avoid clagy type foods and mostly milk is fine. Food until one is fun and all that.
Teething toys will help to create a bit more saliva which will help baby to swallow down and clear the phlegm in the throat as well.

Thanks everyone.

Smooth foods like yoghurt and ready brek even set him off, had another attempt this morning and the first mouthful caused an entire bottle to come back up Shock cold milk seems to be the only thing that he takes easily. Will try again tomorrow!

My friend can be a little neurotic and lives and breathes for routine so deviating from it seems to make her thing everything will come undone.
