To think bedspreads should be used?

Right so the weather is nice, so am thinking quilted bedspreads. Haven't had a breadspread since living at home with DM and that was before quilts/duvets (who knew they were separate things) became fashionable.

Anyhoo mentioned this to DH who said bedspreads are just decorative, not to be used. I do not see the purpose (decoration is not a purpose, it's not Christmas and no-one will see it other than the household). So wise mnetters tell me. Is it just decoration or a pretty, functional bedcover?

I have a few kantha quilts and use them as quilts.

However, in the past they've also been used as bedspreads, throws and picnic blankets.

I suppose you use them for whatever you want.

We have used bedspreads for years (fitted sheet, flat sheet, bedspread) and most of our peers have been incredulous. We've just switched to a duvet which is surprisingly nice, though becoming way too hot in this weather.

henhausfrau · 09/05/2018 07:09

I really don't see the point of decorative bedspeads.

sparklepops123 · 09/05/2018 07:10

I use mine as decoration on the bed in winter with duvet, then on their own in summer

Shmithecat · 09/05/2018 07:12

Decoration imo. Quilted bedspreads don't drape properly. They kind of lay across you like cardboard. I like the thin 4 tog quilts from Ikea for summer.

MrsEricBana · 09/05/2018 07:13

For me it a fancy heavy thing in a hotel room and not something I'd sleep under. One thing that puts me off is they can't be washed like normal bedding in so far as being heavy (and decorative!). Same sort of thing as fancy cushions on the bed.

Furano · 09/05/2018 07:43

Decorative.

Get a lovely 4 tog duvet for summer

hammeringinmyhead · 09/05/2018 07:45

Decoration! We have a black one that goes over the end of the bed when it's made. Far too scratchy to sleep under and needs dry cleaning!

DragonMummy1418 · 09/05/2018 07:49

We have a dog.
She's not allowed upstairs at night.

We put a bed cover / spread on the bed during the day to keep it clean as she's very cheeky and will sneak in when we're out and get on the bed.

mum11970 · 09/05/2018 07:51

As a family we quite often sleep on the duvet with just a bedspread over us. Both are on the bed and we just get under as many layers as the temperature dictates.

BertieBotts · 09/05/2018 07:57

Surely they are for winter, to add an extra layer for weight/heat - not for summer? I would not want to put one directly next to my skin as they can't be washed as easily as a duvet cover.

Faultymain5 · 09/05/2018 10:13

Thanks I'm after function otherwise it's just a waste of money and space. Sitting looking pretty is pointless just for the family.

Personally I can sleep with my winter duvet on all year (realisation about togs are very new to me). I just thought as DH always complains that something lighter and slightly heavier. Will do more thinking and may just order a new lightweight quilt.

Decoration or an additional top layer of its really cold. We have different summer and winter duvets.
